'5- HEALTH & CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Aug. 8 - Aug. 14, 2003 - 81 FITNESS Preparations begin for American Heart Walk By Jim Cresson Lt. Gov. John Carney Jr. led a group of two dozen American Heart Walk team lead- ers, July 30, as they kicked off their prepa- rations for the annual walk set for Oct. 4 at Redden State Forest. Carney, who will serve as honorary American Heart Walk chairman this year, said he has always been an advocate for fit- ness. Carney, who serves as chairman for the Delaware Health Care Commission, noted fitness and exercise can help many Delawareans live longer and healthier lives. Carney noted the commission's concern over the No. 1 killer nationwide and in Delaware: heart disease. "I've tried to get people to change their lifestyles to include exercise and improve their health," Carney told the Heart Walk team captains. "The most fulfilling work that we do in life is working to help others. What you all do each year with the Heart Walk isso important to so many people." Heart Walk Chairman Rob Book of Delaware Electric Cooperative has re- turned for a second consecutive year as the head of the event. "Last year we raised over $60,000, and this year we're shooting for $85,000, and we'll help you team captains every step of the way," said Book. "Call us and we'll come visit your business to make a presen- tation." Book and American Heart Association Sussex County Executive Director Mary Beth Furjanic emphasized the annual walk at Redden State Forest has more partici- pants than any other such event in Delaware, with nearly 600 people walking and raising donations last year. "Why do we walk each year?" asked Fur- janic. "We walk because the money raised goes toward research and improved tech- nology for treating heart diseases. Delaware's cardiovascular death rate is near the top nationally. Young and old are affected. When team captains seek dona- tions for their teams, they should ask them- selves and their teammates: 'Who can I walk for?' Make it personal; we all know someone who has heart disease. We all can walk for that one special person or loved one." Fact sheets and tips for raising money within, a company by using fun incentives were passed out to team captains, who will in turn share the knowledge with their em- ployers and fellow employees. The most aggressive fundraising usually winds up being the most fun, too, said Furjanic. She asked team captains to promote the $100 goal for each walker, and reminded them Continued on page 67 Jim Crmmon photo Kicking off this year's American Heart Walk with a team captains' meeting at Redden State Forest, July 30, are (l-r) Lt.
