(;ottage Continued from page 24 Lou Teeter. The committee com- mented on their choices in a writ- ten release, calling 1 Stockley Street a "rare example of pure preservation," whose owner has also preserved the natural land- scaping as well. Presenting the award to Planet X, the committee said, it is a "very creative example of a residential building in our commercial district which has been adapted to commercial use without dramatic change to the original structure." The landscape preservation award was, ironical- ly, given to owners of a new home at 141 Columbia Avenue. Though the home is new, the landscape was preserved during construc- tion, with the house tucked in among existing trees. Shrubs were moved, preserved and replanted. 14 Columbia Avenue is a clas- sic large Rehoboth cottage which has been painstakingly restored, with the owner choosing to sand and repaint aged screens and other architectural elements rather than replace them. The winner of the Residential Renovation award, 94 Sussex Street, represents one of ' the numerous small cottages scat- tered throughout the Rehoboth community. The committee salut- ed the owner for "making the most of the available space and accentuating its charm." The award winner for restored or reno- vated landscape is 4 Rolling Road. Committee members called it a "vibrant example of a beautifully maintained existing garden. The owners have clearly spent much effort to create and nurture this exuberant garden." 20 Ocean Dri- ve is a new ocean front cottage with unique roof line and a tradi- tional cedar shake facade. The owners built a "beautiful new home on one of the few remaining oce_an front lots. It is complemen- tary to neighboring properties and interprets Rehoboth Beach style grandly and creatively." The new South Moon Under Complex at First and Rehoboth represents, in the committee's view, "creativity and quality." Although many peo- ple may miss the residential struc- ture which housed Mac Hall Mc- Cabe Realtors for many years, the complex was a Cottage and attention given to this innovative new complex makes it a welcome addition to Rehoboth Beach's commercial district. The garden at 34 Oak, by all accounts, replaces vhat had become a virtually bare yard. Existing trees have been pre- served and plantings have turned this yard into a "charming and comfortable retreat." The owners of each property will receive a custom-designed ceramic plaque with the Cottage & Town Award logo, suitable for display on the building's facade, and a certificate for dinner for two at a Rehoboth restaurant. These certificates were provided by the Rehoboth Beach Restaurant Association. The com- mittee also includes co-founder Michael Carr, Patti Shreeve, Re- hoboth Planning Commission member and artist; Jeff Seamans, Rehoboth Art League board mem- ber; Kathy Kramedas, Rehoboth Main Street president; and Eliza- beth Hooper, president of the Re- hoboth Beach Historical Society.
