The two-week contract with Dis- ney studios was part of the tour, and the 30 college students were welcomed into the animation fam- ily by Walt Disney himself. Working with Walt "We got to talk right to Walt," Herman said, "and he took us into the studio and explained anima- tion to us. We kind of understood what he was doing with 'Fanta- sia;' we got to see some of the ac- tual cels, and it made it more per- sonal for us." She said the studio founder tried to get tickets to a local premiere of Continued on-page 53 event. They invited her to be their guest of honor and set up her col- lection of photographs taken when the then-20-year-old spent two weeks in Hollywood becoming part of the "Fantasia" sound track. The still slightly magic event took place in 1940 as members of the Westminster College Choir made a three-month tour that took It's taken 57 years for news of her fame to find her in her resort area home, but the musician is now recognized as one of the vo- calists in the groundbreaking Dis- ney cartoon movie, "Fantasia." Her talent and accomplishment brought her into the spotlight at a special reception at the gallery Aug. 9. "I've never been feted in such a manner," Herman laughs as she recalls signing autographs for three hours before gallery owners Vickie and Mike Hamill took her and a party of friends to a celebra- tory dinner at the Buttery. Before the gallery cleared enough for them to slip to their dinner, hun- dreds of Disney fans had come in to meet the retired music teacher and look for their favorite Disney characters on the walls. Plans for the evening started months ago when Herman stopped by to introduce herself to the Hamills.
