"Steel Magnolias" opens at Rehoboth's Daystar Aug. 21 "Steel Magnolias" is Coming to the Daystar Dinner Theatre in Re- hoboth Beach for a six-week run, opening Aug. 21 and continuing on Thursday and Saturday evenings through Sept. 27. Written by Robert Harling, "Steel Magnolias" became an overnight hit when it opened at the WPA Theater in New York City in March, 1987. Hollywood subsequently picked it up and turned it into an equally smash hit movie. Six women comprise the cast of the show, which takes place entirely in Truvy Jones' beauty shop in the small, close knit community of Chinquapin in northern Louisiana. The women who frequent Truvy's shop come for more than to have their hair shaped and curled. They are life- long friends who share comedy and laughter, sorrow and tears, caring and love in a performance that theatre goers will savor. Truvy Jones is played by Suzette Riggin of Georgetown, who during the almost four years she has been with Daystar has ap- peared in numerous shows, in- cluding "South Pacific," "Fiddler on the Roof," and "Chapter Two." Currently, she is in "All I Need is the Girl," and "Kissin' Country," companion shows that close Aug. 14 and 16. Amy Baker of Seaford, who plays Annelle Depuy-DeSo- ta, Truvy's somewhat scared and lost new assistant, is in her second ever tage production after mak- ing her stage debut as a singer and dancer in "All I Need is the Girl." Clairee Belcher, widow of the former mayor of Chinquapin and the town's witty but deeply caring Grande dame, is played by Bar- bara Vail of Salisbury. This is her first stage appearance with Daystar, although she has ap- peared in some of the murder mysteries that Daystar performs on the Queen Anne's Railroad Dinner Train. The prettiest girl in town, Shel- by-Eatenton-Latcherie, is played by Kimberly Wray of Millsboro. Wray has a long history with Daystar, having served as an ac- tor, singer, dancer, producer, choreographer. She was in "Friends," "Let Freedom Ring," "Fiddler on the Roof," "A Dick- ens of a Christmas," and is cur- rently in "All I Need is the Girl," and "Kissin' Country." Mary Anne Stein of Milton, an- other newcomer to Daystar and al- so to the area, has the role of Shel- by's mother, M'Lynn Eatenton, a socially prominent career woman in Chinquapin. Stein is not a new- comer to the stage, however. She has been doing community theatre since 1967, having appeared in "Fiddler on the Roof," "Pal Joey," "The Odd Couple," and "Last of the Red Hot Lovers," among many. Lois Daris of Ocean Pines, another newcomer to Daystar, plays Ouiser Boudreaux, a wealthy curmudgeon who, despite her acerbic tongue and personali- ty, is loved by her friends. Since retiring to the Eastern Shore in 1993, Daris has worked with the Pines Players and has appeared in "Auntie Marne," and "Scrooge and Marley." "Steel Magnolias" is being di- rected by Tom Sweeny of Lewes, who in addition to directing, can f But.tery\\;but'tG.r6\n. (Old English) a place where bread and ale are stored.
