On an October 1996 trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mr. and Mrs. J. Thomas Goodwin of 31 Foxwood Court, Lewes, attended the 25th anniversary of the "Kodak Albu- querque International Balloon Fiesta." Th# Fiesta welcomed 1,200 pilots and 850 balloons from all over the wodd in every shape imaginable. "It was the biggest balloon event in the wodd and the Cape Gazette was there," wrote the Goodwins. "it was a must-see-to- believe event - an overwhelming and exciting experience," they said. Albuquerque is New Mexico's largest city, located in a timber and farm region. The city was founded by the Spanish in 1706 and it grew dramatically with the 1880 arrival of the railroad. In the canals of Venice The northeastern Italian city of Venice rests on 118 alluvial islets in the Gulf of Venice connected to the main- land by bridges. Gondolas and other boats provide the only means of transportation among the islands. Sally and Andre Beaumont of MiUsboro visited Venice in the fall of 1996 and wrote after coming home: "Yes we do keep in touch - but- we loved Venice and its surrounding islands. Unfortunately the Delmarva Peninsula can't compare. Nonetheless we're happy to be home and receiving our Cape Gazette each week." Refugees fleeing the Lombards settled the Islands in the fifth century. The island communities created a city that came to dominate the Adriatic and became Europe's leading sea power. Marco Polo symbolized its spirit of enterprise in the thirteenth century. I I !
