CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Aug. 22 - Aug. 28 1997 - 43 MDA telethon ,]has it all: comet y, music, drama, more Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Rodriguez, Elaine Boosler and many more hot young comics already are scheduled to appear on the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Asso- ciation (MDA) Labor Day Telethon set for Aug. 31-Sept. 1. They'll be joined by many stars from television, film, music, sports, stage and the circus arena in 21 and a half hours of non-stop entertainment. Originating from CBS Televi- sion City in Hollywood, Calif., with live and taped segments from New York, Chicago, Minneapolis Wynton Marsalis is among the performers who will entertain during the Muscu- lar Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon set for Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. SPECIALIZING IN SALF- OR and more, the nation's best known live television fund-raiser offers unsurpassed variety and vital information about MDA's fight against 40 neuromuscular dis- eases. The telethon begins at 9 p.m. EDT on Sunday, Aug. 31, and national and local segments will spotlight people affected by muscle-wasting disorders through taped profiles and personal appeals. "We're going to pull out all the stops to keep our more than 75 million viewers focused on our lifesaving message," said Jerry Lewis, MDA's national chairman and the star of the telethon. "I'm always deeply moved by the num- ber of great performers volunteer- ing to help "my kids" Labor Day weekend and by America's tremendous response to help fami- lies affected by progressive neuro- muscular diseases." Lewis, taking leave from his starring role in the London stage production of "Damn Yankees" for his 32nd annual Labor Day broadcast for MDA, adds, "We've got a terrific lineup from every area of show business, and many more favorites will sign up before the show airs." This telethon marks an impor- tant anniversary: the 30th year in which Ed McMahon will serve as telethon anchor. Lewis and EDGEHILL PHARMACY Peddlers Village Love Creek * 945-7500 McMahon will be joined in Holly- wood by four co-hosts: nationally syndicated and Emmy-winning talk show host Jerry Springer, "Entertainment Tonight" corre- spondent Jann Carl and comedi- ans Max Alexander and Norm Crosby. The New York telethon broad- cast on WWOR-TV will be head- lined by Elaine Boosler, singer Maureen McGovern and broad- cast journalist Denise Richardson. Comedian Tom Dreesen, and WGN-TV news anchor Allison Payne will co-host the Chicago broadcast, while broadcasting leg- end Casey Kasem and his actress wife, Jean, will hold down the fort at KCAL-TV in Los Angeles. Here's who's on tap for the MDA Labor Day Telethon: Comedy - Joining Jerry Lewis, Jerry Seinfeld and Paul Rodriguez in the telethon laugh fest are comedians Chuck Booms, Carrot Top, Diane Ford, Mal Z. Lawrence, Sarge, Rip Taylor and Bob Zany. A special segment from the Improv Comedy Club will feature Shelly Berman, Kathy Buckley, Margaret Cho, Bill Dana, Harvey Korman, Cathy Ladman and Steve Marmel. VH-1 segments featuring top names in popular music to show tunes from Brittny Kissinger, Broadway's "Annie," the classical violin of Rachel Burton and bar- bershop harmonies by Expanded Sound. Other musical performers include Alabama, Bon Jovi, Wyn- ton Marsalis, Kenny Chesny, Willie Chirino, Charo, The Doo- bie Brothers, Crystal Gayle, Mannheim Steamroller, Gary Morris, Nana Mouskouri, Ricky Skaggs and Leslie Uggams. Special Appeals - Ann Mar- get, whose husband, Roger Smith, has myasthenia gravis, one of the diseases covered by MDA, is slat- ed to bring a message about MDA programs. Other actors who will make special appeals include Tony Danza, Dennis Farina, and Michael Greyeyes. In a particularly poignant seg- ment, actor Tom Poston and his wife, Kay, will join Lewis to describe their battle with another disease covered by MDA, amy- otrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease). The neu- rodegenerative disease, which affects Kay, leads to severe dis- ability and usually proves fatal in a few years. The sports world will be repre- sented by baseball star Brett But- ler, welter-weight boxing champi- on Oscar De Le Hoya, and Olympic gold medalist gymnasts Bart Conner and Nadia Comaneci. Dance and Novelty - Dancers of all types will dazzle viewers, include Tony-winning tapper Savion Glover from the Broadway hit, "Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk." Other dancers range from the Irish group Riverdance to the Bal- let Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandez. In addition, the Anita Mann Dancers, Ben Vereen and Tap Dogs will hit the boards. Novelty acts round out the telethon roster, including Cirque de Soliel, comedy magician Chips Cooney, Gregory Popovoch with his trained cats, acts from Rin- gling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus and the Universal Cheerleaders Association.
