12th Annual Jazz Funeral slated for Bethany Beach on Labor Day Every year on Labor Day evening, Bethany Beach is the site for the town's most unusual event that celebrates the end of the sum- mer season - The Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral. According to a spokesperson for the 12 annual Jazz Funeral Com- mittee, the funeral "is open to all mourners," and is "held in honor of our departed friend, Summer, 1997." The funeral procession is sched- uled to take place on Monday, Sept. about 5:30 p.m. at North First Street and the Bethany Beach Boardwalk, as tradition dictates. The funeral starts at 5 p.m. with "The Wake." A solemn proces- sion will follow at 5:30 p.m., and the event ends with "The Recep- tion," scheduled for 6 p.m. As is the custom, the Jazz Fu- neral Parade route will not be specifically planned in advance. "Part of the mystery of the Jazz Funeral is that the participants never actually know when the Jazz Funeral will begin or where it will go," said Moss Wagner, founder of the event. This year's procession will most likely start on the Bethany Board- walk and travel south down the boardwalk to Garfield Parkway to Pennsylvania Avenue. The Funer- al then goes back up Garfield Parkway to return to the board- walk. The procession will be ac- companied by a jazz band. Those who participate in the Jazz Funeral are encouraged to dress the part, according to Wagn- er. "This is Bethany's Mardi Gras," he said, "so please dress appropriately." Each year, more and more peo- ple come to celebrate the sad and joyous part of summer's end. This year's event promises to be fun for the whole family. The 12th annual Jazz Funeral Committee is seeking volunteers to help organize the event and do- nations to cover the cost of enter- tainment.
