CAPE GAZE, Friday, August 27- septembei- 2, 1999,91 Collins, Derricr:son, Clark win Cook ix Eemorial The Ethel Cook Memorial Scholarship Tennis Tournament was held Aug. 13-15 at the Re- hoboth Beach Country Club, and when the action was over, Jerry Collins of Lewes took home the singles title, while Regan Derrick- son and Chris Clark garnered the doubles crown. Collins defeated Chris Clark 6- 4, 7-6 (7-4) in their second straight title match in as many years. "Chris played a great match," said Dan Cook, Rehoboth Beach Country Club teaching pro. "Jerry was just too tough today. He's a real good tournament player." In the consolation final, Dr. Balepur Venkataramana of Lewes defeated Don Derrickson 6-0, 7-5. "Dr. V and Don are both scrap- pers," Cook said. "They had a rough match., In the doubles final Chris Clark teamed with Regan Derricks0n to defeat Jim Orange of Chestertown, Md. and Artis Ore of Philadelphia, 6-4 and 6-0. "Chris and Regan started out a little slow, but they turned up the heat in the second set. They're a very good team," Cook said. In the consolation final, Terry Wilkerson of Lewes teamed up with Charles Plante of England to defeat Burt Dukes of Rehoboth and Walt Beck of Lewes 6-2, 6-1. "It was a great tournament," Cook said. "We raised over $500 for the James H. Groves High School, and that makes me very happy." The Ethel M. Cook Memorial Scholarship ges to a Groves graduate who best represents the qualities of Ethel Cook, who grad- uated in 1989 at the age of 79. Dan Cook, a former teacher at the James H. Grove High School and Ethel Cook's son, gives the schol- arship each year to keep the mem- ory of his mother alive. teele' (ttn llop Holler for husbands at SeaCoast Speedway The SeaCoast Speedway will present its annual Husband Call- ing Contest, sponsored by Brighton Suites, Saturday, Sept. 4. The contest, similar to hog calling contests at county fairs, features women calling their mates. The contest is open to women ages 18 and older, and judging will be done by fans. The grand prize is a 3-day, 2- night getaway at Brighton Suites in Rehoboth Beach, along with a lavish breakfast at the Great American Bistro and a "taste of ales" from Dogfish Head Micro- brewery. The main gate opens at 7:30 p.m., with racing at 8 p.m. Gener- al admission is $5 for adults, $2 for kids ages 6 through 12, and free for kids under five. For more information, call 629- 5721.
