Those two join to form Herring Creek shown in the foreground of this aerial pho- tograph. Guinea Creek branches off from Herring Creek near the many marshy islands that fill the shallow waterway. And beyond Guinea Creek lies the expansive stretch of land known as Long Neck. Herring Creek Dennis Forney photo draws its name from the fact that schools of herring used to fill its waters early each spring for their annual spawning migration. They would leave the saltwater of the ocean and follow their noses toward the freshwater of their birthplace. Their arrival each year signaled the onset of spring as certainly as the return of ospreys for nesting. Also visible in this photo are Pot Nets North just above the mouth of Guinea Creek, Long Neck Village (top center), and Winding Creek Village (top right). ...on the Quiet Side.
