Shed a tear atthe 12th annual Jazz Funeral in Bethany Sept. 1 Bethany Beach will again be the site this Labor Day weekend for the town's most unusual event that celebrates the end of the sum- mer season - the Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral. The 12th annual Jazz Funeral. open to all "mourners." will be held Monday, Sept 1. at North First Street and the Bethany Beach Boardwalk. The "Wake" will begin about 5 p.m., tbllowed by a "Solemn Procession" at 5:30. The event will close with "The Reception." where mourners will have a final chance to bid adieu to their departed friend, Summer, 1997. The route of the Jazz Funeral Parade, as is the custom, will'not be specifically planned-in ad- vance. "Part of the mystery of the Jazz Funeral is that the participants never actually know when the Jazz Funeral will begin or where it will go." said Moss Wagner. the event's founder. This year's procession will like- ly begin on the Bethany Board- walk and travel south down the boardwalk Garfield Parkway to Pennsylvania Avenue.- ;F.uner- al then goes back up Garfield Parkway to return to the Board- walk. And, as always, the proces- sion will be accompanied by a jazz band. - .- The Reception, will immediate- ly follow the procession, will take place from 6 to 6:45 p.m., and will feature refreshments, entertain- ment and some reminiscing about the departed season. Anyone wishing to participate, said Wagner. IS encouraged to en- ter in to the spirit of the event and dress appropriately. The Jazz Fu- neral, says Wagner, is "Bethany's Mardi Gras." The Jazz Funeral Committee is seeking volunteers to organize the event and donations to cover the cost of entertainment.
