38 - CAPE GAZETTE - Friday, September 1 - Monday, September 4, 2006 Volunteers needed for Coastal Cleanup project Delmarva Power is joining with environmental, civic and business organizations throughout the region in supporting the 20th annual Coastal Cleanup this fall. The effort aims to remove trash from beaches and riverbanks throughout Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and New Jersey. Volunteers are needed to clean up approximately 75 locations. Most cleanups will occur Saturday, Sept. 16, while others will take place on other dates in September or early October. Each participant this year will receive an original Coastal Cleanup T-shirt, courtesy of Delmarva Power, which has been the primary corporate sponsor of the event for 16 consecutive years. "Delmarva Power believes this annual cleanup is an environmen- tal, educational and community event," said Matt Likovich of Delmarva Power's community relations department. "The cleanup benefits the environment, educates the public about the dan- gers of pollution and brings peo- ple together to work on a worth- while project. The cleanup also helps increase awareness of the need to recycle." Coastal Cleanup is part of International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by The Ocean Conservancy, a nonprofit group that works to protect the world's oceans. The types and quantities of trash collected will be item- ized. The data will then be used to pinpoint the source of debris, as well as target ways to reduce or eliminate waste. Approximately 2,500 volun- teers collected more than 34,000 pounds of trash in last year's cleanup. Typical debris picked up included cigarette butts, beverage containers, food wrappers and fishing gear. Some of the more unusual items included ice skates, shopping carts and a ceiling fan. Participants can register online at www.dnrec.state.de.us. When volunteers report to their site, they are given data cards to record the number and type of trash they pick up. This information tells the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control what kind of activities produce the trash and where they can focus their attention when it comes to creating policy.
