154 - CAPE GAZETTE - Friday, September I - Monday, September 4, 2006 Kayaks, canoes compete on scenic Broadki00fi Race raises $24,000 for historic theatre By Jim Westhoff Cape Gazette staff Families flocked to the seventh annum Broadldll River Canoe & Kayak race, to compete, browse for bargains and enjoy a day on the lazy, tree-lined fiver. Held Saturday, Aug. 26, 123 people competed in the seventh annual race, up from 93 from the year before. "The course was great," said Cyndi Janetzko of Falls Church, Va., the top finisher in women's single kayak. 'Whe water was perfect. It is just a beautiful ride with hardly no power-boat traffic." Janetzko said she particularly enjoyed the large field of women competitors. "It's hard to find a race with women in racing kayaks and here we had four. This is probably the biggest kayak race on the Eastern Shore." A fundraiser for the historic Milton Theatre, the race grossed about $24,000, said Karen Duffield, executive director of Milton Development John Potoeki pours hun- dreds of ducks in the Broadkill River for the start of the Great Duck Race. Competitors paid $5 to sport- sot a duck, and the sponsor of the fastest duck won $500. Potockl is a member of the Milton Chamber of Commerce. Corporation. "I think it was oneof our most successful events ever," she said. "People seem to really enjoy this particular race," Duffield said. "Recreational paddlers enjoy the course for the opportunity it offers to have a nice day with your family. It's amazing how many family members we have doing this together. We had a grandfather and grandson team, lots of father and son teams, and several mother and daughter teams. It's really just amazing." They had seven competitors the first year of the race, in 2000. Since then the event has become a critical fundraiser for the renova- tion of the historic Milton Theatre. "We took a completely derelict building in 2000," she said. "Now it is a unique performing arts cen- ter, and a second-release and clas- sical movie cinema house. It's a multi-use facility that the commu- nity is also using for private events. This vision is coming true, but we are still relying on various fundraising vehicles." ggrlpli em lke ]PJver Hundreds lined the slime at the Brondkill River to watch the fin- ishers and browse the booths of Bargaim ou the BmadldH. Near Blann's pet gifts, the orig- inal artwork of Milfmd native James Fairbanks was generating a lot of attention. His paintings and sculptures had nautical themes and a strong sense of place. One of his largest paintings was of an old boat in dry dock. "They were restoring an old tug in Kingston, New York," he said. "I was there for days sweat- ing out in the sun, painting this." Hundreds of people browsed among the vendors. Patricia DeGraw of Milton said she was happy she came. "I think this whole event is very family oriented," she said. The results are in...
