166 - CAPE GAZETTE - Friday, September 1 - Monday, September 4, 2006 Hopes are high for Cape boys, girls cross country By Chrissy Beckman Special to the Cape Gazette" With veteran runners eager to pace the cross country team into a winning season, Cape begins its 2006 fall season with vast potential. Preseason began Aug. 15 on the Legends Stadium track and the scenic roads of Lewes. Numbers already proved strong, with nearly 30 athletes turning out on the fn'st day. The boys team lost five members of their lead pack to graduation. No. 1 runner and foreign exchange student Sven Haag was. included in that hand. However, Cape's future continues to be bright. "With the returning varsity runners com- ing back this year, we should be in pretty good shape for our boys," said head coach George Pepper. "Many built a strong mileage base over the summer and several worked on the beach patrols to get training in." Senior Paul Ecker and juniors Brett Morris and Rory Rogan are currently run- ning as Cape's top three. In a recent time trial during practice, the three worked together and put in respectable times for this early in the season. Ecker also placed second overall in the Run for Chad 5K a couple weeks ago. "We've already been running in the 17- minute range," commented Morris. "We're all going to do very well this year. I have high expectations for us." Cape's field is still young; the line-up being primarily sophomores and juniors.
