al/'. ,M'E "GE'r1,'Frftlayl SepCeber -'epCmlll,'let Steele's bombarded with business in the wake of Crime Bill passage "Here Lies the Banned Guns Born of Your Forefathers and the Constitution. Died Aug. 25, 1994. Killed by Congress. Next: The Rest of Our 'Constitutional Rights." That's the message on the sign posted in the form of a tombstone at the Steele's Gun Shop counter in "Midway Shopping Center. Owner Charlie Steele and his cus- tomers are reeling at the Crime Bill which has made its way through U.S. Congress-and they say they still won't be sure exactly what it entails until the smoke clears on the final amendments. "It started about noon on Mon- day - I guess it just started sinking in and everyone said let's go to Steele's," Steele said of the weapons being banned. "It's not just assault rifles and handguns, but pistols and certain shotguns with pistol grips or those holding more than ten rounds." Steele believes that 35 to 40 percent of his usual inventory will be illegal when the measure is sighed into law, although there might not be much left in the store by then, as people flock in to make purchases while they can. "I'm still not sure what will happen then - if I will be able to sell what's left of those particular models or not. I was informed'to just go about my business now and that I would be notified of what to do," he noted. For instance, he just received the latest amendments today, al- tholagh they were stamped July 8, and "even the agents call here to find out what we're doing aren't sure, although we're considered guilty if we don't know," Steele said. For instance, according to what he is reading, people will have to make all purchases of weapons through a gun shop - there can b no private transactions - and that the gun dealers would be respon- sible for performing criminal checks. Also, the definition of "dangerous weapon" seems hazy at best - such instruments as ham- mers and scissors could be inter- prated as falling under the provi- sion, he explained. "You know, there has never been a crime committed with an assault gun in Delaware, to my knowledge, and the you can count on one hand those committed in the rest of the country. More peo- ple have been killed by golf clubs! This has much more to do with control than with crime," Steele said, adding that his feelings of "outrage, fear and shock" are shared by his many loyal cus- tomers. One of his most outspoken friends and customers is Jody Hudson of Lewes, who was on hand helping Steele answer phones and customers' inquiries. "The phones rang more insistent- ly," Hudson said. "kate veterans, one wearing a purple heart on his hat, were steaming. Men who had fought in the ultimate service of their country were buying guns and stocking up on ammo with a panicked air of urgency." Hudson said these veterans "consider it a right to have any weapon they choose. They fought only to see their senators and con- gressmen betray them." The dove hunters who usually comprise the majority of their cus- tomers at this time of year, were vastly outnumbered by other pur- chasers and were surprised to learn that even the dove gun they wanted would soon be classed as an assault weapon due to the wording of the bill. Trish Vernon photo Charlie Steele, owner of Steele's Gun Shop located in Midway Village, said his business has been booming since Congress passed the Crime Bill last week. Gun enthusiasts have been flocking to his store to purchase the guns that have been banned in the legislation before President Clinton signs the bill into law on Labor Day.
