6Z* CAE GAZETTE, lriday, 6eptember- 2,-September 6, 4, Even resort merchants need vacations! By Betty Fleming Maybe the summer visitor to Rehoboth Beach and Lewes doesn't think about it, but "locals" sometimes wonder, where do the shop 6wners and restaurateurs go after the summer season is over? We asked some of those busy folks. "Right now, we're open seven days a week, working until 11:30 p.m. or midnight," said Tom Ibach of Ibach's Candy By The Sea in Rehoboth Beach. "After Labor Day, we decrease the days we're open gradually." Ibach said last year, he closed weekdays during January, but this year, he may close down the whole month of January for a much-needed rest. Come this October, Ibach *,viii have some surgery on his right shoulder. "I timed this for after the October 1 Chocolate Festival," he said. "I'll have to take it easy for awhile but I have help and I'll be checking on things." If Silver Lake freezes up like it did last winter, Tom Ibach will be out there on his ice skates as he did last year. A former ice hockey player for the University of Delaware, Ibach loves snow ski- ing, hockey and skating. January will probably find him making some repairs on his shop, working on his equipment, etc. "Mostly, I want to take some R and R," said Ibach. John Alwood, owner of Books By The Bay in Lewes, another hard worker, says his shop will be open through Christmas and then close down January through mid- March. "We usually open in time for Easter," he says. One of the area's busy retirees, Alwood says he and his wife Bet- sy, a realtor with Jack Lingo in Lewes, like to travel on their free time. "We have daughters in northern Virginia," said Alwood, "and my wife has a sister in Tuc- son, Az." They also like to golf in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Wild Birds Unlimited shop in Rehoboth Beach is also open seven days a week these days but come Labor Day, owners Alan and Sherry Garey will "slow down" to 10 a.m. to 5-5:30 p.m. days, with 9 p.m. evenings on Fri- day and Saturday. From January through March, they'll be open four days a week: Friday, Satur- Continued on page 63 RE/MAX RE/MAX RErMAX RE/MAX RE/MAX RE/MAX RE/MAX RE/MAX OPEN HOUSE PRICES STARTING AT ONLY s19,900 Accounting INCOME TAXES Advice Planning TaxProblems , oy 645-5558 Foraker & Company, P,A.
