74 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Sept. 6 - Sept. 12, 2002 EDiS launches new venture: Building God's Way EDiS, Who is currently building two new middle schools for the Cape Henlopen School District, has leveraged its relationship with Butler Manufacturing to form two new relationships that will provide a unique approach to affordable school constructionutilizing preengineered buildings. The ven- ture is with architects Daniel Cook and Associates (SCA) and Afford- able Building Concepts (ABC) of South Carolina and Utah. EDiS also won the Construction Management Association of America's (CMAA) esteemed 2002 National Project of the Year Award for the Appbquinimink School District construction pro- gram. EDiS will receive the award, for public projects under $50 million, at CMAA's annual meeting in San Diego Oct. 15. The genesis of EDiS' new ven- ture to provide affordable school buildings began several years ago when DCA and Butler Manufac- turing joined forces to provide cost-effective school and church designs to the Christian communi- ty. The program is called Building God's Way. ABC learned from the successes of that program and be- gan to focus on the secular school market to provide affordable schools to both the Christian and secular markets in the region. "This service will prox, ide an- other option to a specific segment of our existing client base;" said Brian DiSabatino, president of EDiS' building systems, who is heading up the new venture. "More and more of our clients are asking 'for prototypical buildings because of the efficiencies in- volved. One undeveloped market that lends itself to this type of con- struction is schools." The approach by ABC is cost ef- ficient for many reasons: first and Submitted photo A Rob0World judge, professional engineer Frederick T. They are simple and economical in design. The gymnasium is in the center of the building rather than an appendage. The mechani- cal and electrical systems are de- signed to provide maximum effi- ciency not only from a construc- tion perspective but also from an operational perspective, Finally, construction and materials costs are reduced because of a special buying program available to DCA partners. Called Cornerstone Sup- ply Inc., this service provides sig- nificant discounts on a variety of standard products used in con- stmcting affordable buildings. DCA, through its Building God's Way program, has been able to build for as little as one-third to one-half traditional construction COSTS. For the secular market, ABC ex- convenient location. $129,900 HL 1937 pects the numbers to be a bit high- er due to the inherent differences between doing business in the public versus the private sector. However, the costs still excite many public and charter, school prospects. Instead of building for 30 percent to 50 percent less, it's more like 20 percent to 30 percent less. "EDiS is excited to be involved on the ground floor of this worth- while business," said EDiS Chair- man E. Andrew DiSabatino Jr. "We have always tried to stay ahead of the game with ne6, serv- ices and affordable school build- ing is our latest addition." EDiS got its start in school con- struction in 1918 at Tower Hill School in Wilmington and the company has worked repeatedly for Tower Hill for nearly a century. EDiS has completed more than 100 education projects worth more than $500 million since the com- pany began focusing on the educa- tional market in the 1950s. In addition to the Appoquin- imink School District construction program, other projects EDiS has completed for the 2002-03 school year include Wesley College's Slaybaugh Hall; Campus Commu- nity Charter School in Dover; Woodbridge School District's Vo- cational Education Facility; the new St. Anne's Episcopal School in Middletown; and the Diocese of Wilmington's new Christ the Teacher School in Bear. "As an example of EDiS' con- Stant emphasis on innovation and cost-effectiveness, we are simulta- neously building two new, identi- cal middle schools for the Cape Henlopen School District," said Andrew DiSabatino. "The school district will reap the benefits of lower design tees, low- er construction overhead and low- er future maintenance costs."
