CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Sept. 6 - Sept. 12, 2002 - 91 DC entertainers to be featured at t]HEER anniversary fete The Warren L. and Charles C. Allen Jr. CHEER Community Center will be celebrating its third anniversary Saturday, Sept. 28 with a special dinner-dance. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails and a buffet dinner served at 7 p.m. Catered by the Sail Loft of Mil- ford, the dinner will feature lemon pepper chicken breast and top round beef with burgundy sauce; for dessert, there will be a special birthday cake. Dancing will be from 8 to 11 a.m., backed by the music of Charlene Cockran and the Fifth Avenue Band of Washington, D.C. Cockran has recorded and per- formed in the Baltimore/Washing- ton area as a solo artist and band leader since the 1980s. She is cur- rently recording her first inde- pendent CD. Her work also includes televi- sion, radio, theater, concerts, clubs, private parties and conven- tion. She graduated from Wesley College in Dover with a bache- lor's in psychology and classical music. The Fifth Avenue Band per- forms as a duo, trio and quartet, and cover music from oldies to country and from jazz to rock. The group includes George Spic- ka on piano and guitar. Spicka has been performing for 25 years and is included in "Who's Who in En- tertainment." Joe Doyle is a ver- satile musician with a seasoned singing voice. He also plays gui- tar, keyboard, sax, flute and har- monica. Charlene Cockran and the Fifth Avenue Band have performed at the gala for the Washington Bal- let, held at the Finland Embassy and at the benefit Black and White Ball for Central Virginia American Red Cross. Tickets for the complete evening are $30 per person, and Restaurant, senior The Milford Senior Center and the Coliseum Restaurant in down- town Milford will host a number of events during the month of September, beginning with a din- ner dance Sept. 8. From 4 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8, all are invited to a dinner buffet and dancing to the Smooth Sound Dance Band. The cost is $12 per person. center team for September events At 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, it's lunch and a movie, as the Coliseum hosts a screening of "Oklahoma" and an assortment of menu choices for lunch, includ- ing a reuben, taco or BLT with french fries. The cost is $5.75 per person. An all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner will take place from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, at the Mil- ford Senior Center. This is a mem- bership fundraiser and the public is invited and encouraged to at- tend. The menu includes salad, spaghetti with meat sauce, Italian bread, jello, coffee or tea. Established in 1986, this gallery features the work of more than 75 regional and international artists and craftspeople. The featured artist for the Art Loop will be Nick Ser- ratore. His pastel paintings, etch- es, and still life works are fa- vorites in Lewes, as many of his paintings feature evening scenes from the Broadkill River and the Lewes Canal. He will be present at the gallery to discuss his work. Last year's grand prize was the in- vitation cover image - a fabulous view of the Lewes lighthouse by Nick Serratore. For this yqar's fall Art Loop, Thistles will be exhibit- ing the work of local artist Victor Letonoff, a fine artist who works primarily in oil and watercolor and paints local scenes from Cape Henlopen and surrounding areas, as well as still life and portraiture. As an artist, Letonoff's awards are numerous, From the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, he received the Thouron Award for Painting, the Morris Blackburn Landscape Prize, the Charles Toppan Draw- ing Prize, the Plastic Club Award for Painting and the Mable Wilson Woodroe Memorial Award. He will be on hand to discuss his work. The Art Loop is a collabo- ration between the Lewes Cham- ber of Commerce and seven local Lewes galleries.
