September 19,1996 Singer who conquered arthritis to appear at Rehoboth fete Sept. 20 "Hawaiian George" Enuton didn't have much to sing about a few years ago when he was crip- pled with arthritis. He kept active, however, and on Friday, Sept. 20 he will be the fea- tured performer in "A Hawaiian George Beach Party" sponsored by Sussex County Senior Ser- vices, Inc. (CHEER) at Rehoboth Convention Center. The public is invited to the ca- sual dress event which will be held from 6 to 10 p.m., and senior centers throughout the county are selling $5 admission tickets. The price at the door is $7. The buffet will include a wide range of cold cuts, cheeses, meatballs, salads and refreshments. A cash bar will provide beer and wine and all pro- ceeds will go to Meals on Wheels Delaware. "Hawaiian George" has been performing in the Maryland- Delaware area for nearly five years. Educated at the University of Maryland where he received a degree in electronics engineering, he worked 28 years for the Feder- al Communications Commission. He was chief of the FCC's FM broadcasting division before he retired in 1989. Full of energy and in his mid- 50s, Enuton decided to continue working, so he opened his own consulting firm. That's when his health problems began. The stress of running his own business began to wear him down and he devel- oped rheumatoid arthritis. His an- kles and knees were swollen and he was in great pain, which was not alleviated by powerful drugs. "Then a wonderful doctor up near Washington suggested I shut down the consulting business and, since I loved singing so much, start singing full time," Enuton noted. Within two years he was on his way to recovery. "I haven't got- ten rid of arthritis completely. Sometimes in the morning I have to pry my fingers open. But I'm usually out playing tennis in no time at all." He is on his feet nightly, per- forming with a backup band that incudes a karaoke machine, a pro- grammed keyboard and laser and compact discs. Frequently, he has afternoon and evening performances which require him to be on stage as long as six hours a day. Enuton has 300 songs committed to memory and 500 more available in the karaoke machine. "My act is especially popular with senior citizens. They love the old tunes as much as I do," said Enuton.
