"CAPE, GAZET3"E, Friday,. September.IS -,ettdtemimr,i9(,996 -43 Jen EIIInsgworth photo Mike Cook owns Delaware Ramp Systems in Bridgeville, the state's only dealership of wheelchair ramps. Cook sells the customized ramps for autos, fiat beds, trucks and trailers. Sussex b m;iness offers service to the disabled As the owner of Delaware Ramp Systems in Bridgeville, Mike Cook stays busy selling, renting and installing ramps for a variety of purposes. While utility and commercial ramps for vans and autos was his initial business venture, Cook recently saw the need for another, more unique product. In May, he became the only dealer in the state to sell and in- stall portable wheelchair ramps. The ramps make it possible for disabled individuals to get into businesses and residences not equipped with access ramps. "I saw that the demand for it was there," said Cook, "because this type of wheelchair ramp is much cheaper than a hydraulic lift." A motorized lift can cost be- tween $2,000-$5,000, said Cook, whereas the portable, lightweight lifts he sells cost under $1,000. The ramps vary in size and length, and fold up like a suitcase with a handle. Different types of ramps are available for different purposes, from a multifold ramp (ideal for scooters and wheel- chairs), to a threshold ramp (de- signed to allow scooters and wheelchairs to go over doorway thresholds). The best selling ramp, said Cook, is the Handi- Trak line. The line includes a full range of lightweight, portable wheel and power chair tracks made from aluminum. The tracks weigh only nine pounds each, and are available in a range of lengths for maximum accessibility. Delaware Ramp Systems is also included in a referral program with Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, in which automotive buyers get a rebate if they use Cook's service. Cook sells the ramps out of his home in Bridgeville, and is also a full-time police officer with the State De- partment of Natural Resources and a part-time officer at the Bridgeville Police Department. Slatcher, president and CEO of County Bank, has been appoint- ed by the president of the American Bankers As- sociation to the associa- tion's Com- munity Bankers Council. SLATCHER "The finan- cial services landscape is chang- ing drastically, and successful banks need to stay on top of the latest developments," Slatcher said. "This is an opportunity to help influence national policies that affect us and our customers." Council members are drawn from all 50 states and are appoint- ed to three-year terms. In addition to providing input on legislative and regulatory matters, Slatcher will advise the association on is- sues emerging among the nation's 9,000 community banks, such as new technologies that are dramati- cally changing the way banking services are accessed by con- sumers. "Community banks will always play an important role in the fi- nancial services marketplace, in spite of major industry consolida- tion," Slatcber said. Slatcher will travel to Washing- ton, D.C. in November for the council's first meeting of the 1996-97 association year. The American Bankers Association is the only national trade and profes- sional association serving the en- tire banking community, from small community banks to large bank holding companies.
