28 - CAPE GAZE'rI, Friday, Obituaries Otis Jerrell, retired farmer Otis Jerrell, 78, of Rehoboth Beach and formerly of Maryland and Virginia, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Christiana Hospital. Mr. Jerrell spent much of his life farming in Virginia and Mary- land, retiring from the Washington Wilbert Vault Company in 1984. He was a devoted and loving hus- band and father. He is survived by his wife Ros- aLee Jerrell; two sons, Ronnie Jer- tell and Mickey Jerrell; one daughter, Barbara Ann Jerrell; and two grandchildren. Memorial services were held on Sept. 18 at Donaldson Funeral Home in Laurel, Md., with the Rev. Jack Fitzgerald presiding, and burial in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Laurel. David Francis Brand Sr., lifelong musician David Francis Brand Sr., 70, of Swanwyck Estates in New Castle, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at Christiana Hospital. Mr. Brand taught guitar and keyboard and was a musician for most of his life. He had also worked for the University of Delaware and the DuPont Compa- ny. He was a member of the West Wilmington Seventh Day Adven- tist Church. Mr. Brand is survived by his wife of 50 years, Irene May Novinski Brand; his children, David F. Jr. of Chestertown, Md., Paul A. of Smyrna, Martin. H. of New Castle and Emily A. Mickle of Carneys Point, N.J.; his broth- ers, Howard of Rehoboth Beach, Robert of Leominster, Mass. and James of Rising Sun, Md.; his sis- ters, Doris Brown of Rehoboth Beach, Katherine Crocket of Smyrna, Linda Mularczyk of Leominster, Mass. and Elsie Spicer of Middletown; six grand- children; and one great-grandson. Mrs,: Hartlemad  was a home- maker and a private duty home health care aide in the Milford and Lincoln areas. She enjoyed cook- ing, gardening and growing irises in the springtime. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1995. She is survived by two daugh- ters, Robin Barlow of Harrington, with whom she lived, and Georgia Lynn Anderson of Greenwood; a son, William Day of Harrington; a half-brother, Charles Robinson of Lewes; three half-sisters, Leila Wintjen of Lincoln, Dorothy Allen of Dover and Susan Warren of Iceland; and four grandchil- dren, Gregory Chen, Anthony Taylor, Jessica Wilkins and Caleb Anderson. Memorial services were held at Lofland Funeral Home, Milford. Ethel Buchler Tanner, retired school nurse Ethel Buchler Tanner, 84, of Lewes, died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at home. Mrs. Tanner was born in Wilm- ington and soon after moved with her family to Rehoboth Beach. She graduated from Rehoboth High School and the Delaware Hospital School of Nursing. She excelled at nursing, first working in hospitals and then, due to her love of children, spent most of the rest of her career in school nurs- ing, working at Stanton Junior High School, Absalom Jones, Lo- ra Little and Linden Hill Elemen- tary Schools. She retired in 1979. During that time she helped found the Delaware School Nurse Asso- ciation for which she served as president. Though she traveled ex, tensively, upon retirement she re- turned to her favorite location - the Rehoboth area - where she re- mained until the present. Along with her beloved late husband of 30 years, Robert Tanner Sr., she was a charter member of the Bulf r Terrier Club of Philadelphia. Since relocating to Nassau Park (Whispering Pines), she became' active in the Beebe Hospital Aux- iliary from which recentlyre- ceived a 20-year recognition pin, the Lewes Senior Center where she spent much time,- especially with the one-room school house, the Delaware Hospital Alumni Association and Long Neck Methodist Church. She was a de- voted and loving mother and grandmother. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her children and grandchild who all adored her. She will be deeply missed by all whose lives she lov- ingly touched. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sr. in 1968. She is survived by her daughter Barbara "Bobble" Messick and her husband Ed of Herring Creek; her son Robert Jr. "Jim" and his wife, Donna and their son, John Tanner of Tampa, Fla.; her broth- er-in-law and sister-in-law, Gilbert and Betty Tanner; sister- in-law Barbara Lee Tanner; and a multitude of nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service was held Sept. 21 at Long Neck United Methodist Church, Long Neck. Arrangements by Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck. Frank R. Mercer, Cape superintendent Frank R. Mercer, of Lewes, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at home. A teacher and administrator for over 40 years, Mr. Mercer taught in Seaford and Newark schools as well as in the Upper Free- hold Schools in New Jersey. He was assistant superintendent in Newark, pri- or to becoming superintendent in the former MERCER Lewes School District.
