Prostate Continued from page 40 the cancer is in the bone after two years, said Hosmane, there is no cure. " Treatments varied When cancers are localized, treatment is usually surgical removalof the tumor or radiation therapy - either external or through implants. Although researchers are testing chemother- apy treatments currently, there is no approved chemotherapy treat- ment for prostate cancer yet. "New avenues are being explored, using experimental chemotherapy agents," said Hosmane. "Also, cryosurgery is being explored." Cryosurgery would allow a surgeon to essen- tially freeze the tumor. He said a chemotherapy has been approved but has not yet become the stan- dard of care, and cryosurgery is expected to be more widely used within approximately five years. Often, said Hosmane, physi- cians will use a combination of surgery, radiation and hormone therapy "just to enhance the effec- tiveness of treatment." Hormone treatments are aimed at shutting down the body's ability to pro- duce testosterone. Although no one is absolutely certain what causes cancer to grow in the prostate gland, a nor- real gland operates normally because of the hormone testos- terone, which is produced mainly by the testicles. Testosterone serves as fuel for a prostate can- cer. One kind of hormone treatment aids in producing testosterone but shuts down its production in the testicles. Leutinizing hormone- releasing hormone, also known as LH-RH analog treatment may also help a patient have less pain and aid in making urination easier. Some hormone treatments com- bine the LH-RH therapy with a hormone blocking drug, which prevents the adrenal gland's pro- duction of testosterone. A third type of hormone treat- ment involves a patient taking estrogen, a female hormone, to counteract the testosterone. There are side effects possible from all three approaches to hor- mone treatment. We accept most insurances & HMO's. Office flours are Monday-Friday Evening and Saturdays by appointment only.
