J&J's Brick Barn offers fine home furnishings Unique shop also sells antiques and collectibles By Esther Kernosh Interior designer John McLaughlin recently opened J&J's Brick Barn on Route 9 in Harbeson and is featuring fine home furnishings, antiques and collectibles. McLaughlin special- izes in designing furniture and unique living spaces "blending the new with the old." J&J"s Brick Barn provides own- er, operator and interior designer McLaughlin with plenty of space to showcase his creative talents. McLaughlin has the barn and the adjacent house filled with furni- ture he has designed, as well as interior spaces he has assembled using both new and old pieces to complement each other. Cus: tomers who knew the barn as strictly an antique emporium are taken back when they enter the newly designed space. Until recently, McLaughlin worked for promotional compa- nies who helped other companies that were in trouble. "I helped other people set up and open a shop," said McLaughlin. "I helped them with picking out fur- niture and fabrics. Some people said I have a natural eye for this kind of thing." One drawback of McLaughlin's former job was he spent his time in different motels opening up other people's businesses. Last spring, after a three-month stint in Search the Lewes Rehoboth, Daws;: Bethany and Sussex Beach resort areas by going to: www.dpol.com Then, call the real estate specialist: Francis Morphy Richmond, Va., McLaughlin drove past the barn on his way home. "I knew this place was for me," he said. 'q'he azalea's were in bloom and it was beautiful." McLaughlin looked into pur- chasing the brick barn to set up his own showroom. "I thought the barn was plenty big enough for what I wanted," said McLaughlin. He opened for busi- ness in July, and since then his showroom has spilled over into the adjacent farmhouse. In spite of that, McLaughlin does not pre- dict his business will get too big.
