Haggard coming to Dover Downs
Singer, songwriter and quintes-
sential country music superstar
Merle Haggard will perform at 9
p.m., Oct. 6 and 7, at Dover
Downs Slots.
This legendary performer is
known as one of the foremost pio-
neers of American country music,
along with the likes of Johnny
Cash, Willie Nelson and George
Jones. Haggard will perform
some of his greatest hits, includ-
ing "The Fugitive," "Okie from
Muskogee," "Mama Tried,"
"Hungry Eyes," "If We Make It
Through December," "It's All in
the Movies" and "I'm Always on
a Mountain When I Fall."
To date, Haggard has written
hundreds of songs that have cap-
tured the heart and soul of what
country music is all about, attain-
ing a string of awards along the
way. He's recorded 65 albums,
and has four certified gold albums
and more than 40 number one
songs. He's had 42 nominations
for Country Music Awards, more
than any other male country en-
tertainer; 18 awards from the
Academy of Country Music in-
cluding Male Vocalist and Enter-
tainer of the Year; and six awards
from the Country Music Awards,
including Top Male Vocalist and
Entertainer of the Year. Haggard's
style, a blend of folk, jazz and
blues influences, has been an in-
spiration to a new generation of
songwriters.
His first single was "Singing
My Heart Out," which received
some regional airplay on the west
coast, but it was in 1963 that he

eventually broke into the top 20
of Billboard's country charts with
his first national hit, "Sing a Sad
Song." Since then the country
music charts have been his sec-
ond home. His next few singles
all landed within the top 10. In
1966, he entered the number one
spot for the first time, with "I'm a
Lonesome Fugitive," and won his
first Top Male Vocalist of the
Year award from the Academy of
CounFy Muj.c[[
Id 1968, Haggard released
"The Balla4: of Bonnie and
Clyde," whic'oared to number
one on all the' trade charts. The
record also included on the B side
a song caller"Today I Started

date has garnrl more than 400
versions recorded by various
artists.
