(:ape Gazette SCHOOL &amp; EDUCATION TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23- THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2008 27 State school retirees to meet Oct. 1 The 52nd annual convention of the Delaware Retired School Per- sonnel Association will be held at 8:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Modem Maturity Center in Dover. Established in 1956 by a group of retired administrators, the association represents several thousand retired school personnel. Lunch will be served at 12"30 p.m. Mariner Middle golf fundraiser is Oct. 1.1 Mariner Middle School's National Junior Honor Society will host its fourth annual Golf Tournament Saturday, Oct. 11, at Shamrock Par 3 in Milton. Proceeds will benefit the group's annual support- of Adopt-A-Family. Registration begins at 9 am. The rain date is Sun- day, Oct. 12. The cost is $25 per golfer, which includes lunch. Envirothon orientation set Oct. 1 The 14th season of the Delaware Envirothon, sponsored by the Delaware Association of Conservation Districts, begins with an orientation workshop from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension Service (Paradee Building), 55 Trans- portation Circle in Dover. The Delaware Envirothon pro- vides challenging environmental education to participating teams of high school age students and hands-on instruction in the areas of aquatic ecology, forestry, soils/land-use, wildlife, public speaking and a current environ- mental topic. The topic for 2009 is Biodiversity in a Changing World. The orientation work- shop will proyide an overview of this year's areas of study. More information about the Delaware Envirothon can be found at delawareenvirothon.org. Adult advisors are needed to guide the teams in their prepara- tions. Advisors can be a parent, school teacher, 4-H club leader, scout leader or other adult vol- unteer. Teams will be compet- ing in the Delaware Envirothon on April 30, to receive college scholarships and to represent Delaware at the 2009 Canon En- virothon next summer in AsheviUe, N.C. "Our Delaware state champi- ons, representing the Charter School of Wilmington, recently returned from the Canon Envi- rothon competition where they took first place, beating out teams from 44 other states and nine Canadian provinces," said Michelle ]acobs, chairwoman of the Delaware Envirothon plan- ning committee.
