He served there as the resident main- tenance person for many years, retiring in 1996. He was a very in- dependent gentleman, caring and generous throughout his life. He was a member of St. Jude&apos;s Catholic Church, Nassau, and served as a senior grandparent at Shields Elementary School. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Louise Cobb Taylor. He is survived by a daughter, Patricia A. Steinbrick of Putnam, Conn.; two sons, John W. of Ver- non, Conn. and Richard of Atchi- son, Kan.; two sisters, Elizabeth Doran of Langhorne, Pa. and Dorothy Frick of Philadelphia, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A service will be held at l0 a.m., Monday, Sept. 27 in the Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Parsell Fu- neral Homes, 1449 Kings High- way, Lewes, with burial in Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Lewes. Mcllvaine Hurdle, 84, of Holtyville, near Harbeson, died of natural causes on Satur- day, Sept. 18, 1999 in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. Mrs. Hurdle was born in Harbe- son, the daughter of the late Al- fred and Eliza Stockley McIl- vaine. She was known in Sussex County for her artwork, antique restoration, scrapple, dumplings and fruitcake. Mrs. Hurdle was a member of the Rehoboth Art League where she studied art under Howard Schroeder. She won many awards for her paintings. She was a parishioner of St. George's Epis- copal Chapel near Angola, and had played the organ there when she was younger. She was preceded in death by her husband, William T. Hurdle II in 1987; and a brother, Earl McIl- vaine. She is survived by a son, iilliam T. Hurdle III of Hol- lyville; two sisters, Phyllis Hast- ings of Georgetown and Lela Baynam of Harbeson; and her caregiver, Sue Andrie. Services were held at Watson Funeral Home in Millsboro. Bur- ial was in St. George's Episcopal Chapel Cemetery, Angola. Norman E. Clifton, self-employed contractor Norman E. Clifton, 83, or Mil- ton, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, in Bayhealth Memorial Hospital, Milford. Mr. Clifton worked as a self- employed contractor in the Sussex County area, retiring several years ago. He attended Milton Wesleyan Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel P. Clifton, in 1988. He is survived by a brother, Chester C. Clifton of Milton; a sister, Dessie E. Carey of Milton and several nephews and nieces. Services were held at Short Fu- neral Home, Milton, and burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton. CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, September 24 - September 30, 1999 - 33 Lawrence E. Hyatt, carpenter Lawrence E. Hyatt, 45, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and formerly of Laytonsville, Md., died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999 of heart failure at home. Mr. Hyatt was a carpenter. He is survived by a son, Jacob Hyatt, and a stepdaughter, Jessica Carraway, both of Frederick, Md.; his father, Charles N. Hyatt of Ocean View; a sister, Karen A. Kennison of Fredericksburg, Va.; three brothers, Charles Hyatt of Evergreen, Colo., James Allen Hyatt of Germantown, Md. and Richard Mark Hyatt of Rich- mond, Va. MacCoy, active in charities Barbara R. MacCoy, 60, of Re- hoboth Beach, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, of heart failure at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. Mrs. MacCoy was a graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory High School, She was an active mem- ber of many local activities and charities, where she made an im- pact on the lives of those around her.
