32 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, September 26 - October 2, 1997 Jen EIIingsworth photo Cambridge, Mass., residents Judy Pierson (1) and Susan Graves, who pay frequent visits to Rehoboth Beach and Milton, said they love the attention they get when they cruise in their Troll Mobile. Troll Mobile trucks through Cape Region By Jen EUingsworth From Cambridge, Mass. to Re- hoboth Beach and all points in be- tween, the Troll Mobile keeps on truckin'. Adorned with over two dozen of the naked long-haired critters (made famous by Thomas Dam in the 60s), Susan Graves and Judy Pierson's 1990 Isuzu Amigo strikes a formidable image as it cruises down Rehoboth Avenue on a balmy September afternoon. If you spot such a sight, don't be alarmed. Just wave and extend a friendly salutation as you cruise by - it's just the Troll Mobile. As a bright spectrum of colored Troll hair blows in the breeze, Pierson and Graves said they like to keep their windows down and wave to other curious drivers .as they pass by. The women said they didn't ful- ly realize that their presence at the beach had created such a stir until last summer when they spotted a photo of their vehicle framed at a local shop. They said they love the extra attention, and appreciate the well-wishers they've encoun- tered. "It's really restored my faith in humanity," said Pierson. "People wave and call out to us all the time. We just love it. We think it's great." Pierson and Graves said they buy the dolls at different stores throughout their travels. While at the beach, they said they've made many Troll purchas- es at Ryan's Gems and Junk on the Boardwalk. "People have given us Trolls before, too," said Graves. The Troll Mobile currently fea- tures 33 of the dolls from its hood to its rear bumper. "And we have more where this came from," said Pierson. Pierson said she's shampooed the dolls' hair twice because being in the spotlight also means being exposed to elements which can damage even_the best-coifed Troll hair. The women have also added a tribute to Princess Diana on the front of the hood. The homage in- cludes a photograph encircled by a wreath of yellow flowers. Graves and Pierson said they frequently visit the Cape Region and stay in Milton with Judy's sis- ter, Sue Pierson. Back home in Massachusetts, Pierson is a psy- chologist at Boston University and Graves works in the health care field. The current Troll Mobile isn't the first of its kind, either. The original Troll Mobile, a 1978 Toy- ota station wagon, had Trolls Su- per-Glued to it to ensure that they wouldn't fall off. The Amigo's Trolls are secured by a detachable holder. Pierson and Graves said they feel the Troll decorations are a good-humored way to share a laugh and spread some good cheer. "We decided that we'd rather have people laughing with us than at us," she said.
