October 2, 1997 - 65 RAL offering last chance for ceramics classes this season Rehoboth Art League artist and experienced teacher Mary McDo- nough will teach two pottery classes at the Rehoboth Art League in October. The first, "Be- ginning Ceramics," meets from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25 and Nov. 1 in the pot- tery studio. This is the perfect class for those who have always wanted to learn how to use the potter's wheel. The class will cov- er basic forms which include mugs and bowls, and will teach good habits which may be built upon for future pottery classes. Lots of demonstrations and plenty of help will be available. Students will also learn how to fire and glaze their work. The cost is $80 for members; $90 for non-mem- bers, with a $20 materials fee to be paid to the Rehoboth Art League. This class is limited to four people, so plenty of individ- ual attention will be given. The other class will meet on Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25 and Nov. 1, and will cover "Advanced Ceramics." This Hand-colored photograph class set Accomplished photographer Theresa Airey will teach "Artist Materials for the Photographer and Hand Coloring the Photo- graphic Image" at the Rehoboth Art League on Saturday and Sun- day, Oct. 4 and 5, in the Chambers Studio. The c.lass will give com- prehensive descriptions of artist mediums and artist materials that can be used in coloring the photo- graphic image, whether on photo- graphic papers or artist papers. Gesso, sizing, barens, turpenoid, bridges, pastel pencils, oil pencils, papers and sprays are a few of the items that will be discussed. The Saturday class will cover artists materials, what they are, how to use them and why. On Sunday, participants will bring their own images already printed on photographic papers (pho- tographs) and on artist papers (transfers) and will learn how to hand color using many of the mediums discussed the previous day. Students should also bring any coloring medium that they have with which to color. The teacher will have some of the dif- ferent mediums there for them to try. Airey, an internationally ac- claimed photographer, has had her images used in advertising, stage productions, posters, calendars and they are held in many perma- nent collections, including Hillary Clinton's. She has written a book course will expand pottery skills and will work on advanced pot- ter's wheel methods, as well as hand-building techniques, a spe- cialty of McDonough's. Anyone who has previous pottery experi- ence is welcome. The cost is $80 for members; $90 for non-mem- bers, with a $20 materials fee to be paid to the Rehoboth Art League. McDonough received her B.F.A. in ceramics from the Uni- versity of Delaware, and she clas- sifies herself an active artist and for RAIL Oct. 4 5 on her unusual photographic tech- niques, "Creative PhotoPrintmak- ing," published by Amphoto in December 1996.
