The festival is brought to the area as a result of the efforts of the Delaware Cele- bration of Jazz Inc., the producers of Autumn Jazz '97. The jazz fes- tival will include 30 clubs produc- ing over 75 events throughout the four-day weekend, including con- certs, brunches and outdoor cele- brations. An extremely shy child who has been blind since birth, jazz vocal- ist Diane Schuur has become ac- claimed worldwide for her talent. Depth and staying power have earned her the reputation as "the new first lady of jazz." Schuur is one of the featured performers slated for Autumn Jazz '97. She will appear at the Beach Convention Cen- ter on Saturday, Oct. 18. Schuur, who possesses an in- credible three-and-a-half octave range, was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie, who brought her on stage at the 1979 Monterey Jazz Festival where she performed alongside saxophonist Stan Getz. Getz became her mentor, intro- ducing her during a televised per- formance at the White House. She has been recording under his GRP label ever since. She has been awarded two Grammies for her work, and has played twice at the White House. Schuur, who is blind as a result of a damaged optic nerve from ex- cessive oxygen in her incubator, began singing along with Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan records at the age of two. Her first Blind since birth, Diane Schuur not only overcame her dis- ability, but went on to become a stellar jazz vocalist who is heralded as "the new first lady of jazz." She has won two Grammies and twice played the White House. She will per- form at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center on Saturday, Oct. 18, as a part of Autumn Jazz JT. gig was at age nine when she per- formed at the Tacoma Hilton. A whirlwind flurry of festivals and recording sessions worldwide were to follow. Since her first GRP release, "Deedles," Schuur has recorded more than a dozen albums, including "In Tribute." The latter is a salute to the influ- ences in her life, especially Dinah Washington. She has been nominated for her fifth Grammy as "Best Vocalist- Traditional Pop Category" for her album "Love Songs." She also recorded "Heart to Heart" with B.B. King. "Love Walked In," another of Schuur's works, is ded- icated to Dinah Washington.
