Briefl,: Prostate cancer support group begins fall season The Southern Delaware Prostate Cancer Support Group will begin a new season of meetings at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The group, sponsored by the American Cancer Society and Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Delaware, will continue to meet monthly at the VNA office, Airpark Plaza in Milford. Members of the group share their experiences about prostate cancer- its early detection, diag- nosis and treatment options. Guest speakers are scheduled sev- eral times during the year to address specific concerns. New members are encouraged to become part of this vital support program, gaining information through the variety of resources the group has collected and draw- ing strength from others who have been through similar feelings and experiences. Additionally, some members of the group have been trained to alert all men to the importance of early detection of prostate cancer by addressing groups of men; being present at prostate screen- ings; or helping to staff a health fair display. Their positive attitude and appearance is reassuring to a man who has just discovered he has cancer or may be putting off a check-up. Remember, nine out of 10 men can be successfully treated for prostate cancer. The members of the support group encourage men recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and their families to join them at the meetings held the third Tues- day of each month. The organiza- tion also welcomes past members to attend. Brochures and litera- ture will be available and refresh- ments will be served. Anyone needing more informa- tion or support between meetings may call VNA at 422-2010 or the American Cancer Society at 856- 3533. VNA has developed this new service as part of the non-profit agency's strategic plan to provide an integrated home heathcare delivery system to the people of Delaware and the surrounding area. The new service is particu- larly well suited to managed healthcare plans, which require the physician to arrange and approve all stages of care, from hospital admission to discharge to home care and rehabilitation.
