24 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, October 9 - October 15, 1998 Angle Moon photo Annual CROP Walk to benefit Cape Region needy The Lewes-Rehoboth Association of Churches holds a CROP Walk every fall with 25 percent of the proceeds staying in the community. This year the walk was held in Rehoboth Beach on Saturday, Oct. 3, and according to organizer Yvonne Martz, the event was very successful. Lewes Aid Society, Rehoboth Emergency Fund and Casa San Francisco will all benefit. Martz said they hope to raise between $4,000 and $5,000. 7 Adopt a Family gearing up in Cape Region Although Christmas is stil'l months away, coordinators and volunteers of Adopt-a-Family are already hard and work. The pro- gram, co-sponsored by the Human Services Council, the State Office of Volunteerism, Division of State Service Centers and Delaware Health & Social Services, match- es volunteer organizations and in- dividuals with low-income fami- lies. Volunteers then purchase gifts, household supplies and oth- er necessary items for that family Basic, advanced driving courses at Del Tech Those interested in becoming a safer driver and in lowering auto insurance premiums may enroll in defensive driving courses offered by Delaware Technical & Com- munity College, Owens campus. Courses cover current traffic regulations and provide informa- tion on recognizing driving haz- ards, learning how to drive defen- sively and learning how to react correctly in a timely manner. Suc- cessful completion of the class may earn three-year discounts on liability insurance and/or a three- point credit on driver's license. The two-session class will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Nov. 16 and Nov. 18. The cost is $35. "Advanced Defensive Driving" is a refresher course for those who want to renew their auto insur- ance discount three years after taking the basic course. The class meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Oct. 26 and Dec. 14. Cost is $30. For more information or to regis- ter, call 854-6966. Women's discussion group meets at Del Tech Upcoming sessions of, the Women's Brown Bag Network will meet at Delaware Technical in time for Christmas. Adopt-a-Family will begin as- signing families in late October or early November. Anyone who would like to participate in the program, either as a volunteer or a recipient, should call 422-1560. Volunteers wishing to get an early start on their shopping are encouraged to purchase items that can be used by all families and which cannot be purchased with food stamps. These items include personal hygiene upplies, such as & Community College, Owens campus, to discuss volunteerism, mentoring mad career choices. All sessions meet from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; drinks and toothbrushes, toothpaste and toilet paper. Household items, including an alarm clock, cleaning supplies, sheets, towels, blankets, pillows and dishtowels; kitchen items, such as pots, pans, dishes, flat- ware and glasses; school supplies including pens, pencils, note- books, tablets, crayons, scissors are also useful. Once volunteers have been matched with a particu- lar family they may buy personal- ized gifts. dessert are provided.
