88 - CAPE G, Friday, Briefly SCAC board to meet Oct. 12 The board of directors of the Sussex County AIDS Committee will hold its next regularly sched- uled meeting at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 12, at the SCAC office at 107 South St., Rehoboth Beach. As part of these board meetings, community members will have an opportunity to hear reports on SCAC's activities and to watch the directors formulate SCAC policies. The community is also invited to share comments with the board at the close of the meet- ing. At the October meeting, elec- tions for the board of directors will take place. Eligible voters have been notified and have been given a slate of candidates for consideration. Cancer in Common meets Tuesday, Oct. 13 Hope is the topic of the next meeting of Cancer in Common, a spiritually based support group. The group, which gathers the sec- ond Tuesday of each month, will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Epworth United Methodist Church, Rehoboth Beach. The group's purpose is to provide a Christian environment for people whose lives have been touched by cancer. Meetings are open to any- one who is a cancer survivor or currently fighting cancer, and people close to them. For more information, call the group's coor- dinator, Kaye Webb at 645-9711. October 9 - October 15, 1998 SCAC offers AIDS 101 class Oct. 19 The Sussex County AIDS Com- mittee will offer a one-evening class, AIDS 101, at 7 p.m., Mon- day, Oct. 19. The two-hour class will be held at the SCAC office, 107A South St. in Rehoboth Beach. The class is free and open to the public. The organization offers this class six times a year. The class gives basic information about HIV/AIDS, its transmission and its prevention. There is also time given in the class for participants to ask their own questions about any issues they wish to address. Scott Steedman, the new direc- tor of the Sussex HIV/AIDS Re- source Program (SHARP), will teach the class. Currently being established by SCAC, SHARP will be the first resource center in lower Delaware that deals specifi- cally with HIV infection and AIDS. The class i's offered free of charge, but preregistration is sug- gested. Participants who complete the course will be given a certifi- cate of achievement. Smoking cessation clinic offered Oct. 20 Smokers wanting to kick the habit are invited to attend a two and one-half hour "Stop Smoking Seminar" from 7 to 9:30 p.m., Oct. 29 at Delaware Technical & Community College, Owens cam- pus. Anne Connor, R.M.T., R.Hy, will explain how hypnosis can free smokers of the cigarette habit without withdrawal, anxiety or weight gain even if repeated at- tempts to quit have failed. Hypnosis has been recognized by the American Medical Associ- ation as a safe, quick and effective way of kicking the smoking habit. Participants will be awake, re- laxed and in control the entire time. The fee is $39. For more in- formation or to register, call 854- 6966. Bosom Buddies meets Oct. 20 at Beebe Beebe Medical Center sponsors Bosom Buddies at 3 p.m., every third Tuesday. The next meeting will be Oct. 20 in the Tunnell Cancer Center conference room. The support group is for women living with breast cancer, whether they are newly diagnosed, are cur- rently undergoing treatment or are long-time survivors. Call 645-3770 for more infor- mation. AIDS conference set for Nov. 6 in Newark The 1 lth Annual Delaware HIV/STD Conference, "Con- fronting the Hidden Epidemic: Early Intervention Strategies in Reproductive Health and HIV/STD Treatment and Preven- tion," will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6, in Clayton Hall, at the University of Delaware campus in Newark. The keynote speaker for the conference is Dr. Calvin J. Cohen, Harvard University, who will speak on "Evaluating Your HIV Treatment Options: What Clini- cians Need to Know in Order to Provide Maximum Therapeutic Benefit and Cost-Effective Care." Continuing education credits are available for those who suc- cessfully complete the conference events. Space is limited, so preregistra- tion is highly encouraged. The fee for Friday conference is $25, and includes a continental breakfast, lunch, and snacks during the breaks. An additional $10 will be charged for those desiring CME credits.
