The waffle's most endearing charm is that it is vague enough to cover all bases while pre- venting major blunders that might shift the unwanted glare of attention to you. Having said all that, I would like to provide you with a few good choices for your drinking enjoyment. You may notice that my waffle is quite developed. "Perfect practice makes perfect." Shafer 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley Stags, specially dis- trict released April 1, 1998. Dense, lip smacking black plum, vanilla, oak, chocolate and maple with sweet, chewy, textured tanins. This wine is available in half-bottle. 1996 Bonny Doon Vineyard Pacific Rim Chenin Blanc, about $8. This wine is tangy and spicy and very dry for a chenin. It goes very well with salmon or bluefish. This wine was described to me as "leaving an unusually unctuous impression on the palate." I'm still baffled by that. It isn't in my version of the waffle. Last week, drives were dribbles and divots; putts and pitches perfectly pathetic. Golf is not a day off. [ Food Continued from page 62 souffl6 dish with a collar. Chill at least four hours. Decorate top with lemon slices and/or candied vio- lets. Right, Mrs. Styc - tell us where we buy the candied violets. Otherwise, this is a great dessert. So, a man walks into a pet shop and tells the owner he wants a pet that can do everything. The shop owner suggests a dog. The man says, "Come on, a dog?" The owner says, "How about a cat?" The man replies, "No way. I want a pet that can do everything." The shop owner thinks and thinks, then says, 'Tve got it! A centipede!" The man says, "A , centipede? I can't imagine a cen- tipede doing everything, but okay." He gets the centipede home and says to it, "Clean the kitchen." Twenty minutes later, the kitchen is perfect. Then he says to the centipede, "Clean the living room," and 20 minutes lat- er, the living room is perfect. The man thinks this is perfect. He has a pet who can do every- thing. Next, he says to the cen- tipede, "Run down to the comer and get me a newspaper." Forty- five minutes go by and no news- paper. The man cannot imagine what could have happened. Did the centipede run away or was he hit by a car? Finally, he looks out on the porch and the centipede is sitting there. He says, "Hey! I sent you to get a newspaper. What's the mat- ter?" The centipede says, "I'm goin', I'm goin' !, I'm just putting on my shoes." Next week: salad days.
