36 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, October 10 - October 16, 1997 Church Schedule Church Notes Salt and Light stems from Vatican Council Salt and Light is a christian ministry that has come to St. Edmond/St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, among other neighboring parishes. It is one of several lay ministries, stemming from the Second Vatican Council. that has proven successful. Jesus spoke on the subject of Salt and Light during His Sermon on the Mount, telling the multitudes "You are the salt of the earth, you are the light of the world." This may be interpreted as meaning that the salt is a preservative and enhancement of flavor and light shows the way. Having heard His word, Christian believers are to preserve His word and give life flavor by exemplifying it in the way they live. The constitutive elements of the Catholic faith are scriptural, sacramental and social. Teachings and wisdom are learned through scripture. It is said that one way God speaks to us is through scripture. Catholics experience their faith through the sacraments - Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Penance, Annointing'of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. These sacraments touch all of the stages and important moments of the christian's life of faith. All christians should bear witness to their faith through social interaction. Salt and Light focuses on the social dimension. Scripture teaches that we are to love one another and treat each other with dignity, respect and justice. Scripture teaches that the way in which we treat each other is how we stand with God. The measure of the character of any society is how it deals with the less fortunate, poor, elderly, sick, orphans, strangers and people on the edge. In the Old Testament, the primary message of the prophets was not that the people of those times had neglected scripture, forgot .the temple or worshipped false gods, but that the people had forgotten the poor and, therefore, had forgotten God.
