Boney James' most recent suc- cess story, the album "Sweet Thing," has been at the top of sev- eral jazz charts since its 1997 re- lease, and the young artist keeps going strong with his smooth, contemporary style of jazz. Although he explores a different direction on this album, James' genre-spanning style shines through in his latest effort. Local fans will get the rare op- portunity to witness this versatile saxophone sensation when he headlines at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center on Friday, Oct. 17, for Autumn Jazz '97. Tickets are $27 for the concert, which begins at 8 p.m. Besides topping music charts all over the place in jazz categories, including "Contemporary Jazz," "Jazz Album," "Smooth Jazz and Vocals," "NAC/Smooth Jazz Top 30 Album" and "NAC/Smooth Jazz Track," James' "Sweet Thing" has also been rated among the "Urban AC Top 30, "Top New Artists Album" and "Top R & B Album." His musical influences include Earth, Wind & Fire; Stevie Won- der; James Brown; and Grover Washington. He began his career working with such artists as Mor- ris Day, Ray Parker Jr., Teena Marie, Bobby Caldwell and the Is- Icy Brothers. He terms "Sweet Thing" as "everything from jazz fusion to Steely Dan." A two-time Grammy winner, Stanley Jordan will also perform at the festival in conjunction with the Boney James show. Using the techniques called "touch" or "tapping," guitarist Jordan is able to achieve a level of orchestral complexity equaling that of a keyboard instrument. It's this extremely unique musical gift that allows him to perform with an uncommon depth of feeling, which has endeared Jordan to jazz lovers the world over. His type of musical talent is frequently termed "genius."
