40 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Oct. 15 - Oct. 18, 2004 DeVries Continued from page 39 concerned with environmental is- sues. For the annual Beach Clean Up Day in September, he brings his employees and their families in to clean a beach and then takes them all to dinner. Harris understands that by of- feting his employees opportuni- ties for personal development and recognition he can help them .reach their full potential. He shows his employees how to treat others with the respect that they hope to earn for themselves and how to create a quality working environment. Both DiMatteo and Harris were presented with proclamations from the state legislature by Sen. Gary Simpson, R-Milford, and Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf, D-Re- hoboth Beach, as well as procla- mations from Rehoboth Beach Mayor Sam Cooper and Lewes Mayor Jim Ford. In presenting his proclamation, Cooper noted that both DiMatteo and Harris operate their business- es in downtown Rehoboth Beach, "which is a great place to do busi- ness. It is a testament to what a great town we have and it's great to recognize businesses with fam- ily friendly workplace policies." Ford said "A savvy owner knows what makes or breaks a business - rapport with the em- ployers must be high and it is ben- eficial to all. I hope others follow in their footsteps. Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf, D- Rehoboth Beach, presents Harris with a proclamation from the Delaware House of Representatives during the dinner. Both DiMatteo and Harris will again be honored Wednesday, Oct. 20, at the BPW/DE annual Woman of the Year and Outstand- ing Employer of the Year Dinner, to be hosted by DeVries at La Rosa Negra Restaurant in Lewes. Other women to be honored in- clude Lynn Arnold from BPW/Dover; Dawn Elliott from BPW/Harrington; and Margaret Merkeley from BPW/Seaford. So, to truly make a 401(k) plan a fringe benefit, the employer should make available to the em- ployees a truly competent invest- ment advisor that can add value to the 401 (k) plan for the employees. Have the investment advisor work hand-in-hand with the work- ers so together they can develop an investment strategy that could potentially fulfill the employee's retirement dreams. Help the employees make their dreams become a reality. Now that is a fringe benefit that any employee could appreciate. Now some employers will tell you they believe they may be adding to their potential liability by recommending a particular ad- visor to their employees. Personally, I believe just about anything an employer does entails risk. Risk is an everyday event in the business world. To me, a recommended invest- ment advisor is an acceptable risk if the company does its due dili- gence when selecting an advisor to help their employees just as the employer should do due diligence when selecting the various mutual funds to be included in the 401(k) plans. So as an employer, if your 401(k) plan isn't accepted as a fringe benefit by your employees, maybe you need to add value to your 401(k) plan by utilizing an experienced and qualified invest- ment advisor or financial planner. With a carefully selected advi- sor, today's employers can truly make their 401(k) plans a fringe benefit that will be welcomed by their workers. Editor's note: David R.
