70 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Oct. 15 - Oct. 18, 2004 " Overfalls board has three new members The Overfalls Maritime Muse- um Foundation (OMMF) elected three new members to the board of directors at its annual meeting Oct. 8. Joan Reader of Lewes, Bill Ritchie of Rehoboth Beach and Joan Thorsen of Lewes will re- place three directors who left the board. Outgoing board members Ann Hilaman, Helen Schnoebelen and Lou Schulze, all from Lewes, were thanked for their service by OMMF Chairman Elaine ,%im- merman. Simmerman also announced that over the past year, the founda- tion has made significant progress on each of its three major initia- tives: to strengthen the founda- tion's administrative and financial position; to convey to the public the importance of the Lightship Overfalls' role in the area's mar- itime heritagei and, based on those initiatives, to set the stage for raising the funds necessary to save and restore the ship. Simmerman also outlined the steps that the foundation plans to take in the coming year. One ma- jor step is rewiring the ship, which will be done over the winter. Funds for this project will come from a Community Foundation Grant secured for the foundation with the help of 37th District Rep. Joe Booth, R-Georgetown. The foundation plans to raise match- ing funds through its "Light the Light" fund-raising campaign. In keeping with the theme of saving the ship, the speaker at the next foundation meeting will be Stephen Dexter of the University of Delaware's College of Marine Studies. Dexter holds a doctorate and is a world-renown expert on corro- sion of metal in seawater. He has examined the Lightship Overfalls and has consulted with Bill Read- er, the foundation's director of restoration. The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 12 in the parish hall at St. Peters Episcopal Church, Second and Mulberry streets in Lewes. All interested persons are invited to attend.
