CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Oct. 15 - Oct. 18, 2004 - 73 Sussex County libraries to close Oct. 20 Libraries in Sussex County will close Wednesday, Oct. 20, to provide continuing education opp'onities for staff members. Staff from all public libraries in Delaware will meet at Delaware Technical & Community College for the annual Sussex County Staff Development Day. Mary Chute, deputy director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Washington, D.C., will be the keynote luncheon speaker. Libraries will open at their regular time on Thursday, Oct. 21. Karl Chalabala photo VFW Post 7447 celebrates its 105th anniversary Veterans of Foreign War Post 7447, Rehoboth Beach, celebrated its 105th anniversary Sept. 29. "Today we celebrate 105 years of dedication, concern and patriotism," said Post commander Harry McLaughlin. Delaware Secretary of State Harriet Windsor-Smith traveled to Post 7447 to read a tribute from her department as well as a hand-written tribute from Gov. Ruth Ann Minner. "I will tell you from the bottom of my heart," Windsor-Smith said, "of all the things I do, I like working with the VFW best." Minner also declared Sept. 29, 2004, as Veterans of Foreign Wars Day. Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf, D-Rehoboth, arranged a House of Representatives tribute as well, but a death in the family prevented him from presenting it to the Post. The restaurant will donate a portion of the day's sales to the chapter. Long Neck AARP to meet Oct. 27 at Legion Post 28 The Long Neck chapter of the AARP will hold its next meeting at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the Post 28 American Legion Bingo Hall. Luncheon reservations should be made by Oct. 19. The cost is $10 for members and $10.50 for guests. In honor of Fire Prevention Month, the guest speaker will be Patrick Miller, president of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company. Flu shots will also be given this month. Call Gloria Coker at 644-4126 to make arrangements for a flu shot. The cost is $24, for those without Medicare cards.
