CYBER SECURITY ranks as one of the top threats to the nation and to individuals
whose identities can be stolen.
State focuses on comput,.00r safety
campaign throughout October
The Department of Technolo-
gy and Information recently an-
nounced October 2010 is Cyber
Security Awareness Month. Cy-
bet Security Awareness Month is
a national effort to educate inter-
net users of all ages on safe com-
puting and internet practices.
Delaware formally kicked off
the campaign at the Annual Cy-
bet Terrorism Defense Training
event at Delaware Technical &
Community College. Sen. Tom
Carper and Gov. lack Markell
welcomed the participants via
video technology to kick off the
month with many scheduled ac-
tivities. Delaware's theme this
year is Cyber Security is our
Shared Responsibility.
"Our digital infrastructure is
considered to be a strategic na-
tional asset and the protection of
it is a national security priority,"
said Markell. "DTI [Department
of Technology and Information]
has designed an information
campaign that will use many dif-
ferent methods to provide infor-
mation and cyber safety tips for
all Delawareans" said Delaware
Chief Information OfficerJim
Sills.
"Cyber security ranks as one
of the top threats to our nation,
so it's vital that Americans and
leaders of the country recognize
its importance," said Carper. 'xs
a member of the Homeland Se-
curity and Governmental Affairs
Committee, I am working on
comprehensive legislation to
modernize, strengthen and coor-
dinate the security of federal,
civilian and select private-sector
critical infrastructure cyber net-
works. I hope this month edu-
cates Delawareans and all Amer-
ican.s about the importance of
cyber security and the threat it
poses to Our safety. Eventually, I
hope Americans are aware of
this critical issue every day, not
just one month out of the year."
