L 26 - CAPE COtZEaq, Friday, Octbb ]7: Dtbl ','1997 CROP walking Approximately 60 people (a few seen at right) took part in the annual CROP Walk, held Oct. 4 in Lewes and sponsored by the Lewes-Re- hoboth Association of Churches. According to Chairman Yvonne Martz, who thanked all of those who helped and participated, this was the largest group they've had in recent years, raising between $5,000 and $7,000. The funds will be distributed to Lewes Aid, Rehoboth Emergency Fund and Casa San Francisco. Lewes Historical Society sets meeting Oct. 17 The slide collection of the late E. Gould Macintire, a Delaware Bay and River pilot who collected slides as a "before and after" pro- ject, will be featured at a program presented by the Lewes Historical Society on Friday, Oct. 17, at 8 p.m. This free program will be held in the social hall of the Lewes Presbyterian Church located on Kings Highway in Lewes. Judith Atldns Roberts will pre- sent the slide collection which Macintire had titled "Yesterday and Today." The 'qToday" is now 30 years ago, and many changes have occurred in Macintire's com- munity. E. Gould Macintire was born in 1904 and was apprenticed to pilot John Church in 1923. His great uncle was John Penrose Virden, his father was J. Frank Macintire, his brother was Howard F. Macin- tire, who was the father of Lewes Historical Society vice president James Macintire - and all were Delaware River pilots. Macintirc married Helena Coverdale and they had three children: Con- stance Hopkins, Helena Macintire and George G. Macintire, who is currently a river pilot and who made a gift of his father's collec- tion to the Historical Society. E. Gould Macintire died in 1970. Roberts, who will present the slides, is a past president of the Lewes Historical Society, and has been a member of many historical organizations, including the Zwa- nendael Heritage Commission, Friends of the Fisher-Martin House, Delaware Heritage Com- mission, and the Lewes Long Range Planning Commission. She has been an active member of the Historical Society since 1974, and a director for many years. Roberts has also been instrumental in the development of walking tours and numerous other activities spon- sored by the society. She is known for her role as chairperson of the Antique Fair along with her hus- band, Jim. The Antique Fair has now grown to two annual fairs, one offered in spring and the other in August. The slides to be shown cover many areas of the town of Lewes. Light refreshments and a time to socialize will follow. The public is welcome.
