The tea will be held Wednes- day, Oct. 22, at the Robert and Eolyne Tunnell Cancer Center from 1 to 4 p.m. In its first 20 months of opera- tion, the Tunnell Cancer Center has brought a level of service to Sussex County for which resi- dents previously had to travel as far as Wilmington. As a result of opening of the center, patients can now receive radiation treatment and chemotherapy in one facility - an important boost for an increasing number of patients whose treat- ment program includes both. On an average day, about 35 people receive radiation treat- ments at the Tunnell Cancer Cen- ter. Since Beebe's chemotherapy program moved to its new loca- tion in the Tunnell Cancer Center, the number of patients using it has increased substantially. Joseph R. Biden Jr. announced last week. "This is an excellent way to remind women that mam- mography is the best means of early detection of breast cancer, and that early detection saves lives," said Biden. This is the fifth year that Biden's legislation, on Mammog- raphy Day has been adopted. Oc- : tober i s Breast Cancer Month, and 53 of Biden's Senate colleagues have joined in co-sponsoring the legislation. "I am also pleased that begin- ning in January, Medicare will be- gin paying for annual mammo-,, grams," Biden said. In the past, Medicare only covered the cost of mammograms every two years. Biden introduced legislation re- quiring the increased Medicare coverage and it became law as part of the recent budget package. "This will make a huge difference in the lives of older women. The risk of breast cancer increases sig- nificantly with age; a woman at age 70 has twice the risk of a woman at age 50," Biden said. Biden noted that mammograms can detect tiny cancers up to two years earlier than clinical exams or self-examinations. "That's why the American Cancer Society rec- ommends annual mammograms for all women40 or older," he said. Governor proclaims October Physical Therapy Month In acknowledgment of the nu- merous benefits of physical them- py and in recognition of the dedi- cated group of highly trained pro- fessionals who work in this healthcare field, Delaware Gov. Thomas R. Carper has proclaimed the month of October, 1997, as Physical Therapy Month. In urg- ing all Delawareans to recognize the contributions of physical ther- apy in promoting healthy lifestyles, the proclamation noted such benefits as returning people to employment; teaching people more efficient ways to move and use their bodies in ways that re- Burn that fat! Easter Seals' physical therapists contacted the governor's office to request the proclamation. Easter Seals has been offering physical therapy to children and adults since 1948. Easter Seals Rehabili- tation Centers are located in New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties. There, they provide physical ther- apy to people with a variety of dis- abilities including, but not limited to neck and back injury, stroke, brain and spinal cord injury, cere- bral palsy and other developmen- tal disabilities. Physical Therapy Month is a chance to remind people in our state of the benefits of physical therapy. It is also a terrific time to remind our Delaware neighbors that physical therapists work with other members of a rehabilitation team (occupational and speech/language pathologists) to help people with disabilities gain greater independence. of Rehobotb Beach ...........
