Traditional and innovative, Milford's Banking House Inn is revered for its fine fare Set in a historic building in Milford, the Banking and flail-service location for a small wedding or a House Inn combines the best in elegant restoration with fine fare that can be both traditional and innov- ative. As new owners Dan and Rhonda Bond approach the Inn's 12th anniversary, their first as proprietors, they are dedicated to upholding the tra- dition and reputation that the Banking House has earned over the years. Although the food has come to be recognized for taste, quality and presentation, the Bonds feel that they are serving history and style to every diner as well. They love to show off the house that dates to 1787 and to share some of the history of a building that served as a coach inn, a bank, home to a gover- nor and even a community hospital. The establishment has been a favorite in the Mil- ford area since it pioneered downtown restoration in 1985. Now, diners in the resort area are discovering that after a short and direct 25-minute ride, they can be eating specialty dishes, such as veal pecan or steak Diane, in a welcoming and relaxed atmos- phere. They can be seated in the main dining room, complete with fireplace and piano, or take a quiet corner table in one of the side rooms, which also fea- ture fireplaces and lighting by twinkling crystal chandeliers. For a little touch of nature and solitude during a meal, the upstairs back balcony provides a clear view of the'Mispillion River as it winds through the center of town. The Bonds credit the Inn's original ownerg, William Macklin and Charles Kable, for setting the tone of a fine French country inn and for establish- ing a multipurpose restaurant and bed and breakfast with great food, good service and great atmosphere. The inn has come to be recognized as a picturesque special-event reception. Catering off the premises has also established the restaurant as one of the most versatile in southern Delaware. Holidays and special occasions bring families and friends back to the Banking House, time and again, and sometimes, the catering service brings the elegant and convenient Banking House back to them. In addition to the daily lunches and dinners, the inn also schedules several special events throughout the year. Wine dinners feature seating around a com- munity table with diners sharing topical conversa- tion as they sample wines and specialty dishes. Annually, the inn hosts a candlelight concert with chamber music and dining in the Banking House and across the street in the Towers Bed and Break- fast. The restaurant varies its menu, but there is always an emphasis on French cuisine. Steaks, veal and seafood are prepared with fresh French mari- nades and sauces, and each dish is especially pre- pared to the diner's specifications. Vegetarian dishes are also included in the menu, and the inn prides itself on using only the freshest fruits and vegeta- bles.. Prix fixe dinners are available for $15 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and soup or salad and dessert and bev- erage are included with the entree. A call to the restaurant can result in an update on the menu and directions from other communities in southern Delaware.
