State employment recruitment set Nov. 7 Gov. Tom Carper, Lt. Gov. Ruth Ann Minner and state Per- sonnel Director Dr. Harriet N. Smith Windsor have extended an invitation to Delawareans to ex- plore employment opportunities available within state government at a job fair from 9 a.m. to3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, in the William A. Carter Partnership Center at Delaware Technical & Communi- ty College, Georgetown. In conjunction with the job fair, the state personnel office will offi- cially kick off its new computer- ized walk-in testing program for prequalified applicants, now of- fered from noon to 8 p.m., Tues- days and Thursdays, and from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturdays. The state personnel office is co- ordinating the job fair with human resources staff from 15 state agen- cies, which will accept on-the- spot applications for open and continuous positions. R6sum6s will be accepted but are not re- quited to apply for vacant posi- tions. A workshop will be conducted by state personnel staff on "How to Fill Out a State Application," and typing proficiency tests will be administered. The personnel office will also provide employment counseling on a first-come, first-served basis for job seekers. This service is a new feature added to the statewide job fair in response to suggestions made by previous attendees. Counseling services will deter- mine whether applicants meet minimum qualifications based on training, experience and educa- tion. According to Carper, ,,we are committed to hiring and retaining a high-quality work force to serve the people of Delaware. Because job fairs like this one give us an opportunity to reach large num- bers of prospective employees in one place, they help us to recruit quality candidates for public ser- vice." "I'm always advocating that the government act more like a busi- ness," Minner said, "and this is one of the things businesses do in order to reach out to qualified in- dividuals who can enhance the work force. I look for the job fair to help increase state govern- ment's most valuable resource - it's people." State Personnel Director Harriet N. Smith Windsor emphasized that state job fairs are now a way of doing business, as a result of recommendations made by the Governor's Task Force on Work- force Quality and Personnel Re- form, chaired by Minner. "This is a professional recruit- ing effort that began in May of 1996, and has proven to be valu- able by attracting outstanding em- ployees, which represent the state's diverse population and la- bor market," Smith noted: Discover Professional Property Management.
