46 - CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, November 8 - November 14, 1996 Lewes's Ellsworth addr( sses Blacksmith's Guild of Central Maryland By Dennis Forney Lewes's John Ellsworth took two decades of blacksmithing ex- perience to Westminster, Md. in early October as an invited guest of the Blacksmith's Guild of Cen- tral Maryland. The occasion was the Sixth Annual Blacksmith Days conference. "My faithful companion Kerry Rhoades [a part-time blacksmith from Newark, DE who comes to Lewes occasionally to learn] trav- eled with me," said Ellsworth. "There were about 175 black- smiths and aspiring blacksmiths there. They asked me to demon- strate some different types of forge welding and show them some products to sell in small businesses. I showed them items like plant hangers, fireplace tools, 18th century-style hinges and latches." Ellsworth said he also shared some advice with them about blacksmithing as a business. "Ba- sically I told them not to under- charge - that their work was prob- ably worth more than they were charging." Owner and operator of Preser- vation Forge in Lewes, Ellsworth said interest continues to grow in blacksmithing and the iron-forged items created by blacksmiths. "I'm seeing an increasing use of ironwork in architecture. Back in the 80s there was lots of interest in plastic and chrome but that's changing. People want ironwork fences outside, and inside they're using more and more ironwork railings and grillwork," he said. Ellsworth said he was particu- larly pleased with programs aimed, at and interest by, teenage blacksmiths. "They're really en- couraging younger people. They even had one area set up with wooden anvils, wooden hammers and clay. The smaller children were able to get a real feel for what we do and it provides an op- portunity for lots of practice." Ellsworth said he felt honored to have been invited to the confer- ence as a speaker.
