"1" CAPE GAZETTE, Friday, Nov. 8, - Nov. 14, 2002 - 35 Bddln Reynoids-Hughes photo Sherman Tribbitt celebrates 80th birthday in Rehoboth Former Gov. Sherman Tribbitt celebrated his 80th birthday among family and friends in Re- hoboth Beach on Nov. 2. Tribbitt, a Democrat, was elected as Delaware's governor in 1972, af- ter serving in the House of Representatives, six years as Speaker of the House and one term as Lt. Governor. During Tribbitt's administration, a Freedom of Information Act, was passed along with a new program that would make public buildings accessible to the handicapped. The capital gains tax was reduced from 100 percent to 50 percent and a Departmentof Community Affairs and Economic Development was created to attract new industry to the state. In addition to these actions, Tribbitt vetoed a bill which would have raised the governor's salary to $50,000. Perhaps Tribbitt's greatest triumph during his administration was saving the heavily state owned bank, Farmer's Bank, from financial collapse. Tribbitt has remained active in civic and community causes. Earlier this year, he received the 2002 Alexis I. duPont Bayard Award for lifetime service to the Delaware Democratic Par- ty.
