CAPE GAZETI, Friday, Nov. 9 - Nov. 15' 2001 - 55 Fiber optics pioneer settles in Sussex By Jim Cresson Attendees of the annual Small Business Resource Fair in Georgetown, Oct. 29, were treat- ed to some powerful and proven pointers on how to be successful, straight from the heart of one of Delaware's leading entrepreneurs. Featured speaker Ruth Ellen Miller, president of NoUVIR Re- search, was named Delaware's Small Business Person of the Year for 2000 and is currently Seaford's Small Business Person of the Year. Prestigious recogni- tions aside, Miller's abilities as an astute businesswoman lie in her analysis and clear vision of where her family's 10-employee NoU- VIR business is now placed and where it will be in next year's market and the markets of years thereafter. NoUVIR Research is a wonder- fully unique business. Its multi- patented products - fiber optic lighting systems without the dam- aging Ultra Violet or Infra Red portions of the light spectrum - are designed specifically for high- lighting museum displays, rare archival documents and historic buildings. The 4-watt NoUVIR lighting not only preserves and protects illuminated objects, but it also gives four times more pure light than old-style lighting. The Huntington Archives in San Mateo, Calif. has converted its display lighting from neon to NoUVIR, removing the harmful elements of light and giving more life to the archives' copies of the Gutenberg Bible, Benjamin Franklin's journal and Thomas Jefferson's journal. NoUVIR lighting systems have illuminated many museum shows. As Miller relates, one mineral museum re- moved 660 light bulbs from its gallery and replaced them with 44 four-watt fiber optic systems, quadrupling the total pure light. Ruth Ellen's father, Jack, a re- tired CalTech rocket scientist who helped launch the first moon shot under the guidance of Werner Von Braun, is also the father of NoU- VIR's many patents. In short, Jack Miller created the company by creating the product - pure light without any harmful ultra vi- olet and infra red. Before Jack Miller became sci- entifically interested in what con- stitutes light and how portions of the broad light wave spectrum could be used without using other portions, little knowledge existed on the subject. He went to the li- brary and began researching the works of several Nobel laureates, taking bits of information from each. Using that information and his own expertise in physics, Continued on page 56 Jim Cresson photo Delaware's 2000 Business Person of the Year Ruth Ellen Miller, left, and her physicist father, Jack, have found the perfect home for their NoUVIR Research business in Seaford.
