Kevin Spence photos La Esperanza, Hispanic-support agency, celebrates 10 years Hundreds of up-and-downstate officials and partygoers turned out Saturday, Nov. 11, to take part in a 10-year anniversary party for La Esperanza, a Georgetown-based, non-profit association. Latin American band Katari played ancient Mexican and South American folk music at Dewey Beach's BayCenter, while guests bid on local artwork and even a car from i.g. Burton. La Esperanza's executive director Zaida Guajardo thanked the crowd and shared the stage with Dr. Jaime Rivera, director of Delaware's Division of Public Health. Awards were given to Cecilia Lusardi, who was unable attend, and to Allison, Burris-Castellanos for their dedica- tion to the area's Hispanic community. After dinner was served, Wilmington-based band La Insaciable got the crowd on the dance floor with popular salsa tunes. Gabriel Pilonieta took a break from snapping photos for E1 Tiempo Hispano, the state's first weekly publication, which focuses on Delaware's Hispanic community. Burris-Castellanos was recognized with an "Building bridges through integration." award for Dave and Ann Burton enjoyed listening to salsa tunes after dinner. The couple donated a 2007 ear to help raise money for the organization. Local politicians added to the success of La Esperanza's first gala. Shown are Debbie and Sen.
