j p LIII jill jl ,llllllllllllllllllllll IllllllllBRlqllJwUllllilOlllml t! 52 - CAPE GAZETIIg, Friday, Nov. 19 - Nov. 22, 2004 SBA sets record for Delaware small business financing The U.S. Small Business Ad- ministration's (SBA) Delaware District Office recently an- nounced SBA lending to Delaware small business owners increased by 51 percent during fiscal year 2004. The federal agency approved a record 290 guaranteed loans for $35,771,000, compared to 192 loans for $21,622,000 in fiscal year 2003. Overall lending has tripled since the SBA upgraded its Delaware operations to district of- fice status in fiscal year 2001 and the office financed 95 loans. "This dramatic increase in SBA lending in Delaware is a direct re- sult of SBA's aggressive market- ing and outreach to the small busi- ness community," :'aid Jayne Armstrong, district director of the SBA Delaware District Office. "As a result, more small business owners are aware of SBA's suc- cess in streamlining our loan ap- plications and processing, and our efforts to meet the needs of more small businesses with loans of all sizes." Loans to women-owned busi- nesses jumped 127 percent during the past fiscal year, increasing from 30 loans totaling $2,768,000 in fiscal year 2003 to 68 loans to- taling $5,518,000 in fiscal year 2004. Loans to minority-owned busi- nesses increased by 68 percent: from 53 loans totaling $9,957,000 to 89 totaling $14,264,000. Loans to veteran-owned businesses in- creased by 48 percent: from 21 loans totaling $1,223,000 to 31 loans totaling $5,383,000. Inter- national trade loans increased 80 percent: from five. loans totaling $65,000 to nine loans totaling $1,483,000. SBA loans in Delaware ranged in size from $2,500 to $2,000,000 last year. "The SBA has played a major economic role in opening the small loan market to small busi- ness," said Armstrong. "Small loans are just as critical to small business success as larger loans, especially during the start-up and early growth stages of the busi- ness." The SBA 504 loan program supports small business expan- sion and job Creation. It provides long-term, fixed-rate Subordinate mortgage financing for acquisi- tion and/or renovation of capital assets including land, buildings and equipment. Under the 504 program, a typical transaction in- cludes the borrower's 10 percent equity injection, 40 percent fi- nancing from the CDC and 50 percent financing from a third party lender. The SBA shares the financial risk with private sector lenders by guaranteeing 50 to 90 percent of a small business loan, depending on the SBA loan program. This en- ables the lenders to provide fi- nancing to small businesses when funding is otherwise not available 573-6294. Assistance is also on reasonableterms, available at SBA's website For more information on SBA's www.sba.gov or by calling the programs, contact the SBA SBA's answer desk at 800-U- Delaware District Office at 302- ASK-SBA.
