"We are very fortunate," she said. "A lot of the dioceses did not have it." Media reports from around the world attribute miracles to the statue, including that it sheds hu- man tears, cures alcoholism and immediately converts non-believ- ers. McDevitt said, while she be- lieved in the miracles, she didn't expect any on this trip. "I'm not expecting any tears here," she said. "I have pictures of it. But the whole idea is that we asking reparations for the sins of man. This is a very special event." According to Santo's report of her visions, each of the sins of man, especially abortion and war, are like thorns in the heart of the Virgin Mother. "In front of the palm of Our La- dy's right hand was a heart encir- cled with thorns which pierced it," Santo wrote. "We understood that this was the Immaculate Heart of Mary, outraged by the sins of humanity, seeking repara- tion." Thus, McDevitt said, the pro- cession and the following Mass serve as an atonement service for the world by the parishioners who come to St. Edmond's. McDevitt said this service is not to be confused with praying solely to a statue. "Some people say thos crazy Catholics worship statues," she said. "We know it's a statue. This is about honoring our Blessed Mother." The services will begin at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 19, with a can- dlelit procession led by the Rev. Ray Forester and the Knights of Columbus. Mass will be celebrat- ed at 7 p.m. The church-appointed custodi- an of the statue, Carl Malburg, will speak after mass. A reception will follow. The church will re- main open until 9 p.m. for private I prayer. Services begin at 8:30 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 20, with Mass. A brief talk about the history of the statue will follow.
