The painting depicts an event recorded in the book "The Greyhounds of the Sea," in which the clipper ships Sea Witch, Ty- phoon and Raven raced from New England to San Francisco with cargo for use in the Gold Rush. After a series of tacking duels up the West Coast, the first to arrive in San Francisco, in November 1851, was the Typhoon, although technically the Raven wen the race by making the trip in fewer days.
