Cape Gazette SCHOOL & EDUCATION FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21 - MONDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2014 gS After-school enrichment is Cape Carousel's mission ST. THOMAS MORE TAKES BEST Free program offers variety of classes Rooms at the Lewes School i were busy in September and October where groups of young | people were learning to cook, take photographs, do crafts and practice yoga. It's all thanks to a program aimed at broadening the horizons of young people in the Cape Henlopen School District. For 17 years, students in grades 4-8 have taken classes as part , of the Cape Carousel program. The after-school enrichment i program offers sessions on two different nights in the fall, winter and spring. The fall session - which ended Nov. 5 with Community Night - included courses on scrap- booking, pirates, games, digital photography, drama, paper crafts, yoga, cake creations, learning to play the ukelele, beading, native Chinese cooking and a Science Olympiad. More than 190 students took part in the first session of the 2014-15 school year. There is always a waiting list be- cause classes f'fll quickly. "The interest has maintained and continues to grow over the years," said Dana Long, who has been involved with the program since its inception, serving three years as a teacher and 14 years as program Coordinator. Cape Carousel is a free pro- gram, funded with local money provided by the Cape Henlopen School District. Long said the purpose of the Cape Carousel Program is to create an environment in which students will celebrate their en- thusiasm for learning through the development of their talents. "Working together with instruc- tors, parents and members of the community, students will have the opportunity to extend their learning, to explore their interests, and to develop their potential," Long said, noting that's the mission statement. Students' educational experi- ences are expanded because the two-hour classes provide small-class, hands-on experi- ences taught by professionals in their fields, Long said.
